Found these I think they could be gyms. They have a weird sweet formaldehyde smell, only a slightly bitter taste. no bruising. Spores are rusty brown.

Bitter taste? Why did you taste a mushroom your not sure of?

That is a common identification means....does no harm to taste a tiny bit and spit it out....They look like gyms to me.

Yes, Gymnopilus. If you mean "Big Laughing Gymns", probably not. There is no green staining visible.

Any chance you know the species/ if they're active?

There are many species in Gymnopilus, I don't know which you have. The lack of green staining strongly suggests that these are not active.
What type of tree and a general location in the world will help you narrow the possibilities down, but I suspect you need a microscope to identify further.

Damn I already threw them all away because I thought they were useless. I could probably go back and look for more in another day or two. Shroomery says luteus is supposed to grow in my area as well. They were found in a hilly forest mostly oaks and birch, some pine. About 50ft from a pond. Also are there any deadly species of Gyms?

They definitely got darker as I left them out but I assumed that was from desiccation. It wasnt a green colour either they just went from light yellow to a rusty yellow.

I can tell you i have found that exact same type of gym and it was one of the strongest gym I but it did yesterday so hopefully I will soon have ever eaten but mostly there usually weak but active. Mine also usually did not stain blue or green but, sometimes rarely after drying them they would dry with a shade of blue or green on the stems I also have noticed tiny Pins will sometimes be blue before going into maturity but not always.
So very nice finds indeed I am jealous I have not came across any this year but it didn't rain so hopefully I will Soon.
