Regular mushroom ingestion
    #2366309 - 02/22/04 01:50 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I've been listening a lot to Terrence McKenna and his theories that people used to eat psychadelic mushrooms as part of their diet, and it would slightly arouse them and stimulate their senses.

Is there any evidence to suggest that living like that is unhealthy?

I understand that eating it regularly would mean you probably would develop resitance to copping a trip from mushies. But lets pretend we aren't interested in obtaining those results.

i bet they didnt want to kill each other while on it, probably saw imporntant each other was, and wanted to work as a team finding more food.

Seeing as psilocybin comes around 400 places lower in the toxicity list than aspirin it's doubtful.

Then again, that's not to say there aren't other chemicals in mushrooms.

http://www.hoboes.com/pub/Prohibition/Drug%20Information/General%20Information/LD%2050%20List:

Estimated safety ratios (Safest at the top, most dangerous at the bottom):

Vitamin A: 9637 (mice oral:human oral 15mg)
LSD: 4816 (rodents iv:human oral 0.25mg),averaged
5-MeO-DMT: 958 (mice intraperitoneal:human parenteral 6mg)
Psilocybin: 641 (rodents iv:human oral 16mg),averaged
THC: 420 (rats inhaled:human smoked 5mg)
Aspirin: 199 (rodents oral:human oral 325mg),averaged
DMT: 91 (mice intramuscular:human intramuscular 60mg)
Caffeine: 84 (rodents oral:human oral 150mg),averaged
Acetaminophen: 34 (mice oral:human oral 500mg)
Nicotine: 21 (mice iv:human smoked 0.7mg)

The "Safety Ratio" is based on the dubious assumption that a human
has the same LD50 as an experimental animal in relation to body weight.
The Typical Human Dose for "recreational" or therapeutic purposes
is expressed in milligrams and the number of those doses required
to reach the corresponding LD50 for a 50 Kilogram (110 pound) human
is computed. The assumption here is that the margin of safety for a
drug is proportional to the number of typical doses a person would have
to take in order to have a 50% chance of dropping dead were they a
giant rodent. According to this reasoning, the higher the "Safety Ratio"
is, the less toxic the drug is at normal dosages.

Hey Seuss, here is some more information on this dosagfe leverl of toxicity with mushrooms.

Quote:

In 1978, Jonathan Ott reported that the "Ld50 (lethal dosage) in mice for psilocybin has been determined to be 280 mg/kg, oral ingestion", thereby assuming that a person of average weight (i.e. 70 kg/155 lb) person, "would have to ingest l9.6 grams of [the extracted chemical] psilocybin to produce death." However, in 1989, Dr. Karl L. R. Jansen at the University of Auckland stated that he believes that "the LD50 (the dose at which 50% of a sample will die) has been determined as 280 mg/kg in mice. However, it is not valid to calculate the LD50 for humans by a simple percentage/weight calculation. Mice and humans have very different metabolic rates and dispose of drugs in different ways. It is unlikely that even a large number of psilocybine mushrooms would not be toxic in humans, but we cannot suggest an exact figure from data based on rodent studies."

From Allen, Merlin and Jansen, 1991. Journal of Psychoactive Drugs.

So there is this only one factor... toxicity... which determines whether a food is safe or not?
Surely there are more variables here?

And don't like me to the bookstore
