I have done both and I am a fan of the bucket tek. Simple and Easy.

Why not try both out one after the other and see what works best for you? Each one has been proven to work just fine!

Wow, you've been a member since 2009, and you're just now starting your first bulk? Talk about taking your time:)

I haven't tried the bucket tek, but people do seem to like it, and you can't argue with the results. However, I follow Frank's tek... There is something about knowing you are pasteurizing your substrate properly that makes me feel warm, and safe inside.

Whichever you choose, best of luck to you my friend:)

Peace:mushroom2:

The fukit tek is cool..
But you should definitely go with proper pasteurization

I think I will try Franks..  If I remember correctly I used it last time but had a hard time keeping the temps correct..  The temperature fluctuations while proper pastuerizing are a pain and I worry the whole time it's not right..

Any tips on keeping the correct temperature without fluctuating?

For coir, you can do whatever you want.  There is 0 benefit to pasteurizing coir.  It's a waste of time and effort.

If you think otherwise I'll be waiting for the sources describing all the beneficial bacteria that live in coir that can be saved by pasteurizing.  (There are none)

I run coir in the oven way higher than pasteurization temps.  Left buckets and bags of coir around for months without ever seeing anything grow on them.

i guess if all you can afford to put into this hobby is a plastic bukit..
then fukit.

Its probably a good idea to get into the habbit of doing things solid.
Whether or not your material harbors anything or not.
Coir and verm are both pretty problem free.

:whathesaid:

I use coir exclusively in all my tubs and in all my reptile cages.

My lizards piss and shit in their coir all damn day and it still doesn't contam. I could leave that piss and shit fiesta in there for longer than the life of a mono and I'm sure nothing would happen.

(I like my animals though, so I'm sorry I don't have any photo evidence. Gerald the gecko wouldn't appreciate that experiment...)

Pasteurizing coir 'properly' is silly. Inocuole throws his shit in the oven in oven-safe bags..... I throw my shit in a bucket...

Well welcome back to the hobby and the shroomery, trippy. Goodluck with whatever tek you go with. I do recommend trying out monotubs eventually! I only did one run of trays, then I switched over. I felt my greenhouse was too much maintenance, and I hadn't heard of sgfc at the time.

I've used coir many times without pasteurization.  In fact, I've had buckets of damp coir sitting for months, and no molds grew.  However, the verm needs to be pasteurized to prevent cobweb mold.
RR

Damien's bucket tek and Frank's tek call for verm too, not JUST coir.  You are obviously a very experienced cultivator, and have a wealth of knowledge to offer other members.  With that said, which tek would you recommend to newer growers (OP's question)?
