The easy way to clean your WBS 1

I've been lurking this site for a long time. I have some success under my belt, but have yet to post anything to this wonderful site. One thing I saw that hadn't been addressed to my satisfaction yet was prepping grains. I use wbs, which is dirty often times and a PITA to clean up. Here is a tek I developed, we'll call it Killa's bucket tek, to clean them up fast and easy.

First, go to your local store that carries buckets and plumbing supplies. You'll need to pick up two buckets of equal size, some pvc fittings as shown in the pics, some RTV if you want to seal your joints and such, and some window screen. I also opted for a honey bucket drain as my bucket drain, but you can use a plethora of other items. Just so it drains well out of the bottom bucket. But I digress.
Below are the fittings to pick up, in 1/2" internal dimension size.

The long straight pieces and short straight pieces will need to be cut from 1/2" pvc tubing. If you want a paddle 9 1/2" wide, cut the small spacers at 1 3/16". That worked well for me. As for height of the long bars, these will be the long bars on the paddle pictured below. You will want to leave space in the top of the bucket for either a draped in hose or a nice soaker water sprinkler like I've affixed to the bottom side of my lid. I just run the hose in through a small hole at the very top on the side and wrap the hose in pex tubing insulation to seal up the gaps around the hose going into the bucket.

The below pick is the honey bucket drain. Works well to seal and quickly let out all the water at once.

Using a Forstner bit running in reverse, drill a 1 1/8" hole directly in the center of the lid and the bottom of one bucket.
Drill three holes in the bottom of the same bucket. These are large drain holes. Cut window screen to cover them and seal them down with RTV or silicone.

Now we'll construct the paddle. Take your fittings in the picture, and pvc cement them together to form the paddle as pictured. After this has dried, drill a hole through one of the center pieces of the paddle. Pass a bolt through this and out the other end. Slide another, slightly larger, piece of PVC over the end of the bottom of the paddle and affix this with a fender washer and bolt to the paddle. This will act as a bushing of sorts. Do the same for the top of the paddle.
Slide the top of the paddle, the "bushing" through the hole in the top of the bucket lid. Now PVC cement a 5" long 1/2" pvc piece into the top of the paddle. PVC a 90 degree elbow on the top of this and complete the handle as I have pictured, or use your imagination. I know I'm lacking in some regards on this tek, and it can be cleaned up and smoothed out. However, I wanted to get it up so it can help out other people. Thanks for the info and good reads over the years, hope I can help out from time to time!

Below is what my sprinkler looks like inside the bucket. It's affixed with RTV to the lid of the top bucket. The top bucket is then stacked in the bottom bucket when it comes time to process the seed.

Sure, it is time consuming to build one to start, but not near as tedious as drilling a SGFC, IMO. No fill up the bucket, stir with your hand or whatever, drain, repeat. Just load up the seed, turn on the hose, and turn the handle. When the water runs clear, you're done washing.

It's not hard to build this. And it's easy to clean the seed once completed. Hence, the easy clean WBS, not the easy to build bucket tek. But whatever, if you're into shoving things into other dude's booties, do your thing. I'll just be cleaning WBS over here. But not for long, because I can process it fast. I like to engineer things, and taking a long time once to build something that will save me time for years is a positive for me.

Sorry about the usage. You stack the upper bucket with the paddle assembly into the lower bucket. Crack the top off the top bucket and pour in your seed. It will fit 20 lbs roughly, depending on bucket size. Screw your garden hose into the sprinkler, if you've included one on the underside of the upper bucket lid, or just drape your hose into the bucket through a small notch cut into the top of the bucket. Snap the lid back on and fill her up. Give it a few turns, then crack the drain (I use the honey bucket drain) to allow the water to exit. Keep turning until you're seeing clear water, then close the drain. Disconnect the hose. Leave the seed in for your soak. Then you can just hook the hose back to it after your soak time and clean it before loading your jars. This could be scaled up to a 35 gallon or larger drum, with piping used for paddles, if you ever had a need to process that much grain over time. I personally am growing edibles along with cubes for migraines refractory to other medication.
Thanks blindingleaf. You probably could rinse and pasteurize straw in the bucket, or could modify a metal one in a similar fashion. Using a metal spigot perhaps.
