We have permatech RTV silicone. Look in automotive departments. They are used in car engines at very high temperatures.

All you need is a drum with a 1500w element in the bottom. If you really want to maximize your drums capacity have one drum elevated with the heating element then a open top drum with lid for the bottom drum. Fill the bottom drum with straw in laundry bags, put the lid on then drain the hot water into the bottom drum. After an hour drain the bottom drum and take the bags out to cool. You can also do it with a pump instead of gravity feed.

yeah i get the basics it was more the finer details, the video i shared he had issues with leaking around the pvc fitting and his drainage and wasnt sure about grounding.
I like your two barrel idea - will need to get more room before i could do something like that though.

Surely you have steel barrels over on your side of the pond. They are less common here but you can still get them for free or a few quid

You just need a 1" SS nut and a 1-1/8" hole saw. Then tighten it and silicone like a mofo around the hole inside and out. I would go with 5500w element unless you really like waiting

what size gas burner would i need? i bet that would cost a fair bit to run as well, i thought the heating element would be cheaper to run?

I followed this tek to a T- http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/heating-elements . It heats my cold tap water to temp in about an hour and 45 mins. I have hardware cloth baskets that I put the straw in. The wire mesh is held together using several metal zip ties and wire. They each have chains attached to the sides and bottom of the basket using chain quick links. I hoist the baskets out of the pasteurizers using an electric winch I bought from Northern Tool and a gambrel. The winch is mounted on a black iron pipe track attached to my back porch ceiling, but you could also use a pulley, trolley and hoist stand. The pipe allows me to slide the winch from one barrel to the next.

like drake said, you dont need any fitting. just drill a hole smaller than heater element thread. a rotabroach cutter would be more elegant than regular hole saw. then if you want to make a thread, use 1" 11-1/2 tpi (thread per inch) tap drill. note: 1" pipe measures 1.315" outside diameter, so 1-3/16" would be limit size for your drill bit/hole saw

You will only need the tap if your going into a plastic drum. FYI a 1" tap runs about $35 for a cheapo, look on ebay. If your using a steel or SS drum a 1" locknut is about $5 off amazon.

yea that's because plastic drum is thicker. it will make the element sit stronger, and the locknut is a mandatory if you want to utilize the stock o-ring that come with the element. somehow scoring the drum and stuffing enaugh amount of sealant is a necessary evil.

Oh right, i thought thats what he meant but i hadnt seen anyone else do it like that, everyone seemed to use fittings. Putting my build together is the first DIY ive ever done haha

If you want to install a fairly reliable drain BTW they make bulkhead fittings that kind of use gaskets to push on both sides of the drum. And leave you a 1/2 or 3/4" threaded hole to put a spigot on.
