People who have spent countless hours refining their craft to the point of being considered the best at what they do, being recognized and paid ridiculously for it, and living the dream that motivated them through that hard work isn't really tantamount to slavery IMO.

If anything I think professional athletes tend to be overpayed, far from slaves. That's just a result of bidding on athletes between teams, and the money pouring in from viewers, nothing really wrong with the whole process.

There is real, literal slavery in our penal system however.
You could say wage slavery as well, though I don't think that's really true in America.

This is sort of what I was trying to articulate. I've always seen Althetes as incredibly overpaid. Maybe not football players because often they have a lifetime of medical injuries but a baseball player, a golfer pffft . They GET PAID to play a sport.

And throwing around the word slave/slavery is just irresponsible

Overpaid sure, but considering how much the companies involved in sports leagues and the channels that host games make from it all, it would be robbery to pay the best players less. They get a cut of a fairly large pie.

That's a big argument with college sports too. Little overhead cost, enormous profit, athletes go largely unpaid.

Also, back when there were gladiators, there were slaves forced to fight for sure. However, there were also professional freeman gladiators. Some gladiators were the richest people of their whole states, richer than many aristocrats of the time.

The trend simply never ended, it's been around thousands of years longer than the NFL and NBA. You don't consider them slaves if they enter into contact willingly and make significantly more than the rest of the population.

Yeah these threads make me  if you don't like sports, you don't like sports. There's nothing wrong with that. But to call it slavery is just dumb. These guys make more money than the majority of us will ever see......and they do it by playing a sport they love. Must terrible getting multi-millions to do something you love. Poor guys.

No disrespect intended but read up on some eyewitness accounts on the atrocities of slavery.

Having a coach, team, doctor and whatnot to get you to the apex of your physical ability in the prime of your life, then put on a shiny spandex playsuit and prance around on the track cheered by thousands of people for your whole country or the world to see and earn enough for that cameo appearance to buy a BMW, thats hardly slavery.

Sports on that level is a dream job.

Because of the money involved you get treated and traded like an asset so yes, thats a bit slavery like but a losing basketball team hardly gets the snot paddled out of them by a furious redfaced coach with a half ration of gruel for the week to come so, slavery it isn't.

Yeah, no hint of any type of slavery in any of it that I see. The worst thing about the sports industry and sports fans in general is just the tribalism of it all. I can never understand people who fight with rival fans, or the fact that they'll be so dedicated to a brand even after players change teams all the time anyway, essentially making it a different team with the same uniform.

COnsidering the fact these people get paid to play/train and also CHOOSE to do that particular profession I wouldnt call it slavery in the least> We asre the fucking slaves while they azre making millions by shooting a fucking puck or hitting a fucking ball. Athletes do not deserve to make the money they do.

Entertainment industry is all around just a gold mine. Look at these god damn stupid YouTubers making 6 or 7 figures by making juvenile jokes and playing video games.
