I fucking hate guns but I'm probably gonna have to get one. What's your favorite 45 and why?

Must it be a .45? 9mm though smaller, with current advancements in bullet technology, now attains and passes FBI requirements which is the industry standard.
The reason I ask is that, you say you hate guns, which leads one to believe you may be new around them. A 9 is easier to learn on due to less recoil, has more capacity and the likelihood to find one that fits your hand is greater due to the variety out there.

It would kind of depend on what you intend to do with it.
Personally I like 1911's. They're sexy as hell looking IMO, they're reliable and time tested and of all the guns I shot, there was just this way the 2 I have shot fit so perfectly in my hand that it was more an extension of my arm than a weapon I was holding.
They're pretty heavy though and the full sized ones are kinda bulky for a concealed carry (not that it's impossible or that people don't do it but most people who conceal carry seem to prefer smaller, lighter guns).
EDIT and I meant to say what ^ he said (sort of). Why a 45 specifically? You don't necessarily need that for protection purposes. There are a lot of arguments to be made for smaller calibers, not the least of which: When it comes to using a gun in self defense the number 1 factor that is going to decide the outcome is how well you are able to use it, and .45 ammo is NOT cheap. It's about twice as much as 9mm, so you'll get half the amount of practice out of it. Not to mention the magazine sizes will allow you more follow up shots if necessary.

Remington 1911 R1 Carry all the way baby.
Also, why do you say you're going to have to get one? That's kind of worrying...

Get that Dirty Harry gun! I don't know if it's good or not, but ever since I saw the movie as a kid I wanted it.
Hey, Americans? Can you send me a Dirty Harry gun in the mail? I'll send you shrooms and gin in return. I am not a cop.

Personally I'd go with a Heckler and Koch Mark 23. Now I don't actually know the benefits or even the cost seeing as I just Googled .45 cal and picked the first one that popped up, but does look like a hell of a gun.

Most guns offer a variety of calibers in any given model, so you're better off looking at other factors like specific uses, size/weight, fit in hands, mag capacity/configuration, cost, etc. I say go into a gun store and take a look at and handle different types of gun to check and see what you like and dislike. The most overlooked consideration of caliber IMO is future gun purchases, because you don't want to have to stock up on multiple types of ammo for all the different guns you may eventually own if you can avoid it simply for cost and simplicity.

i have 2 out of 3 of those..except my xds in chambered in .45.. i do not suggest it for the beginner at all.. the compact lightweight frame really doesnt allow for accurate shots. plus, i would never carry a 9mm for self defense.. i would have to have a bullet pass through someone and go hit something expensive or an innocent life. (if it came to that)
glocks are garbage.

full size slides 5 or 6 inches on steel are usually good beginners. the added weight keeps the recoil down. most people with say the 1911 is not a good beginner weapon because of the ability to carry locked and loaded..however with a 1911 the heavier trigger pull will keep most people from shooting themselves in the leg if they forget the safety.
i will have to say, for someone that is beginning into the .45 range, i would send them to the berretta storm.. accurate, great trigger out of the box, easy to tear down and clean and you dont have to deal with the double single action like other berrettas that could kind of screw some beginners up.
the xdm is rumored to be the closest thing to a competition hand gun out of the box. it has a very clean trigger break and still has the safety shot feature (think glock)
i could probably go on for days. but here is the gist of it.
i will always carry around a .45 with hallow points as a self defense weapon. i think the velocity of anything less will do more damage to the surrounding areas than to someone trying to harm me. on that note, i also believe a handgun should feel comfortable in your hands. there is a big market out there and i cant stress enough the importance of a full length slide when beginning into handguns. the compacts are nice, but they wont get you to the decent shooting stage quick enough. they take more time and more rounds to really feel proficient with.

I'm open to owning one but it sorta would have to land in my lap and options would be limited if it does.
Probably a bit more like this:
Than like this:
I know that if it does land in my lap, I'm gonna need one later in life.
I wouldnt concealed carry unless there is a war on but its a good thing to have in your house, properly stored, in case you'd make a genuine enemy or get a home invasion. There's nothing of value in my house to get so when I get a home invasion I know they'll be coming for me. I take a strong stance against violent intolerant groups of all ethnicities, at some point someone might take offense at me. People tend to kill do-gooders like me, I would prefer to send the one who tries to heaven instead. Theres nothing unwholesome about self defense, especially if you're on the right side of the argument.

im a big fan of self defense.
i think america has drawn a big skew of what self defense is. but thats why i carry what i carry. i know if i am ever going to have to use it in self defense i want to be absolutely sure that the projectile hits its intended target and stays put.
i dont want to be in the court room facing some crying brand new mom because the round went through 4 more walls than it was supposed to. that to me would make an already intense nightmare into something i dont have the words for.

If I lived in America I would carry, absolutely, even in something as simple as a discussion on the internet you notice that a lot of you people are locked and loaded.
Let me explain that.
I had a topic some time ago about a friendly fight, illustrated by a hilarious Bud Spencer in memoriam vid. Turns out in the minds of many Americans there is no such thing.
Its in your culture that you have to get ready for a confrontation with an unexpected enemy which may come in numbers that you will have to meet with lethal force.
Thats something in the American psyche. The zombie apocalypse movie genre is a good example.
Other countries tend to be more relaxed, less lethal in their aggression.

thats a pretty good observation...
90% of people i know here conceal carry almost on a daily basis.
i know america has some fucked up shit going on on the daily. from gangs, rapists, home invasions they all seem to be amplified here..
last time i was pulled over while carrying i told the cop when he came to the front door that i was carrying... he said, in this state everyone is carrying. just dont do anything crazy, ill be right back. came back with my ticket anyways.
