Goodbye WBS

So I have been using WBS for grains for the last 6 months quite successfully. I love its price but the prep is messy and long. Today I went to our local natural foods store and bought 8 lbs of organic rye berries @ $1.15/lb. I also picked up a bottle of Sodium hydroxide for another psychedelic project I am doing.
Could anyone recommend a good rye prep tek? There are so many here from reputable cultivators and it's hard to decide. I would like to make 2 or 3 masters and do a G2G. I am running 2 edibles with these and probably a B+.

I like eatyualive's tek for prepping oats. It is both quick and simple.
I have used rye in the past with other teks and I cannot see why this tek wouldn't work for that grain as well. If you like things quick and simple, it may be worth a try.
You can adjust the time in the water depending on how wet you want your grain. If you search, there are a few pictorials on here that show how grains look as they hydrate. You can cut them in half with a knife as time goes by and see how they change.
You probably want the inside of the grain on the wetter side for jars and a little dryer for autoclavable bags.

BTW, whole oats are WAY CHEAPER than organic rye, about 20 cents per pound around these parts including tax.

Uhg. After paying about less than $1 per 10lbs of grain, if I ever had to go back to spending that much money on grain I'd probably just give up this hobby.
Have you ever considered going to a feed store or a grainery? They will hook you up bro.

Go on kijiji, find a farmer with animal feed grade wheat or rye for sale. Buy it from them direct. I picked up 300 lbs of really clean wheat for $60 just last week.

How I do Rye Berry Prep by SpitballJedi. I do it this way every time, except I spread mine on a towel or newspaper in front of a fan to dry. I've never had a big enough strainer to hold it all.
There's also a new quick & easy rye prep by the same user but I haven't tried it.

Is there a reason you don't mention oats? I am a total noob compared to you but I've had a few really great grows using whole oats so far. The fungus doesn't seem to know the difference

I was using oats before there were any teks on how to prep them lol. I don't use em a lot anymore for cubes because I had some real bacteria issues with em in the past and I am not a fan of the low nock points. But they are still a decent grain. I just like wheat and millet the best.

I always do SpitballJedi's quick rye prep. I do 4 quarts per ten jars instead of 3 though, I fill mine a bit more.
I order 2x 25lb bags of rye berries at a local health food store every so often. They're usually very clean too. Very few floaters.
Never tried anything else because these work very well for my purposes. Price is like 90 cents/lb, so if that's a concern maybe try other grains.
I have a farmer friend who buys absolutely massive amounts of feed grain for his pigs, I may buy some from him some day to see how that works.

can't beat oats 12$ for 50#
even if I fucked up half the oats I did it would still make more sense to buy oats than rye or most other grains.

Oata are easy compared to others grains. Cracked corn is cheapest and high knock up points. Only problem with oats is they ferment if not cleaned right.

I assumed oats would be too starchy, but if you all had luck with them then I shall try them next. I'm sure I could get the rye cheaper if I looked around, but as long as i was at that store getting sodium hydroxide, I just picked it up.
The guy who owns the store grows mushrooms as a winter project, but doesn't have much luck. Maybe I can strike a deal and tutor him in exchange for my grain!

It is interesting to hear about oats fermenting. Mine sourced locally are dirty, dirty little seeds.
I stopped with all the rinsing and endless steps for time and because a few experienced growers have said it is just unnecessary. So far so good.
This was grown on uncleaned oats:

With my limited experience, I'm far more concerned with cleaning up my spawn procedures (by way of proper agar use) than my grains.
I'd like to post a pic of my latest (on uncleaned oats + cvg) which may turn out to be my best pinset yet but I'm paranoid about opening the monotub until the pins get bigger. It hasn't been opened since it was made. It may be silly but aborts happen somehow and humidity has been low here lately!

That well may be the wisdom of experience but this tub has wall-to-wall pins and I just don't want to mess up whatever it is happy about!
Since there is so much talk about pinning and evaporation from the micro-climate I assume the primary thing is humidity levels--the same reason we often see serious side pinning in monos w/o liners--they like it moist.
BTW, I'm trying to dial in micropore tape like Pasty and this may turn out to be a very good example. It looked even better this morning, they are starting to grow!
