Possible new beneficial substrate?
    #23655730 - 09/18/16 01:33 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I went to TSC today to get me some whole oats, and I stumbled upon this. The first set of ingredients seem very beneficial for a bulk substrate. Some of them questions as far as being beneficial or not (open for interpretation?), and then the only thing that has me actually worried is the last ingredient which is the preservative. My thought is you could prepare this same block like you would with coir. Either replace this with coir in CVG, or do a 50/50 of this and coir and add in your Verm and gypsum. What do you guys think? Possibly beneficial, or completely detrimental?

These things sit out all hunting season long and don't gather mold. Maybe that's because of all the sodium...or it may be the preservative. I know people have reported putting salt on their bulk subs in attempt to battle contams and it worked for the most part. Not necessarily beat it, but stalls it. But then again, it was applied after the contam showed itself and not during the prep.

Well at first I was thinking of using it as jars. Then for some reason I changed my mind and thought of sub. I think for jars it would be good. You could do it like PF or like grains I think. Obviously you would want to do it more like PF considering it would turn into a powder, but I would probably spawn to bulk. The preservative and all the sodium is what has me worried.

I bet you could actually do it like PF style, crumble, and fruit straight...maybe some Verm. But it appears like it have good nutrients.

Maybe? I dont think the salt content would matter it may dry it out faster tho but afyer mixing and pcing it should bring it down a bit

Are you saying that the salt content is a detrimental thing?

Salt or not, there is no way that product could be used safely in open air as a bulk sub.

There's sodium in water?  Which water?

Does it not bind to the Cl pretty easily?

You know.. Chlorine.  Just wondering how easy it would be for the sodium and chlorine in the water to form NaCl.

The measurement of sodium on a package usually references the amount of salt, since free sodium is a little... reactive by itself.

sodium is in water if you have a water softener. i tried to grow in a
house that had one installed. the results were so terrible i gave up
until i moved. even a tiny amount of salt will fuck up the mush.

Actually, NaCl is what's in your water.  Pure sodium is unstable.

When you look at the back of a label of a drink, and it says sodium, it's doesn't mean the alkali metal sodium.  It means NaCl.  They neglect to mention the chlorine, because who the fuck needs Cl in their daily nutrients.

well according to the ingredients list, it only contains 3.5 to 4.3%. That's if your including both salt and sodium. We're there any other alarming ingredients to you guys?

I'm not doubting you Blindingleaf, but what makes you say there is no way that could be used in open air as a sub. I'm assuming the grains. I definitely thought that after I posted it. But what are your thoughts about it using in jars? Possible?

Oh i didnt do good in chemistry actually everything besides recess and lunch i didnt do good at haha ... i know the amount of sodium in water doesnt compare to actually adding salt i was just thought by watering something down with higher sodium content it would affect the amount in it

It will dilute it, but you're not actually getting that salt out.  It's still in there.  It doesn't just evaporate away or get filtered out somehow.

I'm extremely skeptical.... but part of my love for this is finding weird ways to grow them and weird things to grow them on.

If you are just doing it for fun to see then go for it!
