Convenient -Local- Bulk Subs
    #23655145 - 09/18/16 09:49 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Local is the keyword here.  I absolutely do not wish to order, and I wish to get high volume here.  Enough to start 6-7 tubs, and keep those tubs interchanging for the next 4-6 months.

There are several stores I can go to and get large amounts of bulk subs, casings, etc.  Just need to know really what brands to keep an eye out, what stores have the best deals for the volume, etc.

I've already found an 11kg brick of pure coir at Lowes for about $20.  Picking that up Thursday, but I'm also looking for manure based substrates, casing Etc.  I know about Jiffy mix, so there that, but looking for other/all options so I am not limited to just one brand or just one volume of that brand be it small or large.

Stores that are nearby me are: Several local plant nurseries and garden centers (they tend to overcharge for everything) Lowes, Home Depot, TSC, as well as a few other locally owned small ma and pop type flower shops.

Suggestions are welcome.  Again, ordering is not an option.  Not having high volume shit delivered to my house, nor am I getting raped by shipping.

A bail of hay wouldn't be too hard for you to attain.

I'm not using straw or "hay".  I could get that where I get my grain if I wanted.

Maybe to spawn an outside straw log for edibles, but not for this.

Any other suggestions?

his face lit up and gathered it for me. i didnt do shit. and it was FREEEEEE

Wow.  That's a great idea.

I pass a shit load of farms and horse stables on my way to/from work everyday.  I'll have to stop at one or two.

Any other suggestions?

Oh, and... Shakey or not shakey??

The two on the left are like 30-40 % but they are colonizing so well, I'm not sure I even need to shake.

The one in the middle, I shook.  The Myc looks kinda grey because of the "blue" tinge it has from bruising.  It's recovering well, but not sure the shaking helped a lot.

The three on the right are freshly inoculated aa+ that won't be germinating for at least a few days.

I put spores to grain full well knowing what that could mean.  I have agar but I'm waiting for my plates.  When I get them, I'll start 3 clean grain masters of each.  :/

i personally dont shake. i MAYBE increased the colonizing times by 1-2 days...
and right now, for once, i have TOO MUCH SPAWN(sad right?) and i almost
want it to slow down. damn you agar!!

but definitely hit up them stables for field poo.
my wife used to ride horses and she told me her farm had to PAY SOMEONE to
gather and collect the shit in the field.

you come strolling through and they will gladly let you get some...
beware! farmer john did ramble on about the trees and the hills for awhile
but all the hpoo was enough for like 20 monos... and free

I prefer a peat based casing layer, I love jiffy mix but this tek using large bales of peat you can pick up locally for cheap is more cost effective

Duly noted.  I've got the casing solution of this equation mostly worked out.  It's the nutritious bulk substrate part of this equation I'm looking to solve now.  Though the "bale" of peat does interest me.

I've seen large bags of composted manure based substrates locally for decent prices, but I've had little experience with them.  Guess I'll just have to try them and find out.

I'll definitely be pasteurizing my mixture well however.  I don't trust any brands to not freak out and start producing some odd shit.

In all actuality, most of my bulk is going to likely be a mixture of the following, pasteurized in an oven bag for 3 hrs at 300F.

Dehydrated/Aged Horse poo
Organic Coco coir
Vermiculite
Gypsum

300f is beyond pasteurization. its more like 160-165f.

you dont want to kill the microbe's in the doodie.

you can steam pf style in a spawn bag or in jars.
i always used a pillow case and a seafood steamer with a basket to
drain the poo.

I need to Reread the pastuerization method because it's been awhile.  I'll do so before getting to this portion of my tub prep.

I meant in oven bags in the oven yes.  But I do need to Reread the tek.  Believe it was Frank's proper pastuerization method.  Like I said it's been awhile.

It's been a long few weeks for me myself.  Everything has been dry for me, and I'm used to my weekly ritual.    Daily for buds.

So gonna make damn sure I don't go without for a long fuckin while.
