Opinions on "The Law of Attraction"?

I figure this community is as good as any other to garner some opinions on the Law of Attraction. It's been discussed since the 1800s and covered in some recent popular books.
If you're not familiar, here's the gist: Wikipedia
Today I learned that an acquaintance of mine from college died hiking in Brazil two years ago. He seemed like a bright person, full of ambition and with a very positive energy. Reading his website/blog he apparently embraced the Law of Attraction ideology.
Any personal experiences to share?

In extremo, people in states of extreme poverty are often the most upbeat and generous, for as far as their need allows.

Look at this, just look at this. Where is this kid's Abundance that comes with his Goodness and Positivity? Where are his millions, house with swimming pool and $200K net job?
Many "Law Of Attraction" types are enfuriatingly entitled firstworlders who blame other peoples troubles, which are much worse than theirs, on those people theselves so they can be happy, happy happy, and tweet lofty spiritual messages about how great it is to stick your head in the sand, on an iPhone made by exploitation of third world labor, with use of Coltan minerals that children just like this one have to dig out of the toxic mud with their bare hands.
They blame the hardship and slave labor that gave rise to their affordable iPhone on the victims of this oppression themselves "because they dont think positively enough"
Watch me shove that iPhone right up your ass so you can google search "Wake Up" with your head up there

What he said.
The law of attraction is a concept issued for middle class people to feel good and keep themselfs motivated. It's not a bad idea as it can push you to do some good, and we all know it's easy to be miserable, wherever you are in life. So it can be helpful concept but it's a very hipocritical one. It assumes that cancer victims died solely because they weren't strong enough to stay positive. It puts blame on you and your family if your parents died in a car accident. And all that Asante said in addition to that. It's somewhat like religion- can be helpful but certainly is not true.

Just like your bright, believing, positive friend. No amount of his positivity and belief could save him from premature death. It would be disrespecting of his memory to blame him for it.

I agree with both of your perspectives. Taken in part, it can certainly do some good in a person's life (as can anything that promotes positive thinking).
As a belief system, it clearly has the flaws you both addressed.

If you set your mind on something and actually stay focused, you will more than likely attain it
I believe in it but obviously it has limits

I was just about to say that. Asante, you love to make up your own version of reality.

actually that's you. you're inferring from the ontological perspective of someone in reality peering into a photo of another reality outside of your own, that was taken perhaps randomly, and you're ascribing a context to it, one which you couldn't possibly know the actual reality of.
for all you or Troll#1 knows, the kid merely thought to pass it over stick first, you know, sensibly, like a person with a brain instead of the lack thereof would do. who the fuck passes food on a stick food side first?
only retards.
*excuse the vomit, i tend to turn off my brain posting on these boards, it's the same message every time i visit. someone is saying something rampantly stupid, and they need to be told how and why that is, and it gets annoying. i tend to just post as quick as possible, my impressions, and edit my posts, as they tend to bifurcate down different avenues of thought, which is ill-construction of my impressions. though, there is so much to say, and many ways to say it, it gets to be narrowed down into the usual impressions, here, considering nothing evolves here.*

My experience with it has shown it to primarily be willful application of filtering mechanisms to my life. My time and ability to focus on different things is relatively finite. Taking time to really focus on particular desires or plans increases my likelihood of filtering out information or avoiding and ignoring situations that are not conducive to furthering those desires or plans.
When my energy is not focused, end up dabbling in a bit of everything and not really excelling or propelling myself forward in any one area.
To me, that is about the extent of the law of attraction -- it is not really about drawing new opportunities into my life, it is about being prepared to recognize and capitalize on opportunities that are already there. Less about causing new things to happen, more about not being too distracted to recognize them already being there.
If not done willfully, the mind will do it anyway. It is easy to enter a downward spiral by fixating on the negative in my life. Fixating on the negative results in shitty coping mechanisms, which causes further problems. If my decision is that things that are good for me are too difficult to bother with due to feeling lousy, that means not bothering with them and ultimately feeling worse.

Forget the law of attraction, embrace positive thinking, self confidence and optimism.
Prepare for the worst, expect the best, believe in yourself .
Human consciousness has been proven to influence reality , such as in the experiment showing human intention can influence the results of a random number generating machine.
