Monotub lid GE concern

My 66qt monotub is on its 5th day of colonizing. Everything is looking great. I know the lid is to provide gas exchange, however, there are dry spots around the lid. The lid edges are slightly curved up a little on the corners.

Is this allowing fresh air to come in? Is this okay? or should I add a light weight on top to lower it, but yet not close off gas exchange?

It's fine. I'd be more inclined to use a casing layer in the future and leave it like it is and reap the benefits of extra FAE before I started adding stuff I would have to mess with for every interaction.

Thank you very much everyone. Its my first monotub and I don't want early pinning or a dried substrate.

Early pinning doesn't happen from light or fresh air, it happens from contamination. Full colonization/inability to grow further are the #1 pinning triggers. A healthy substrate just does not ever put out pins before it's fully colonized and ready to fruit.

Also, fruiting conditions during spawn run are aye okay as well. Many will tell you it actually decreases spawn run times and gets you fruits a bit faster than normal.
I am one of those people...

Thank you. Well Im glad I dont have any pins yet or contams. So Morty422, as soon as you spawn, you already have polyfill stuffed and never tape the holes up? I am gonna run this tub till 100% colonization, either none or one day "consolidation". and then switch to fruiting. I am going to test on future tubs putting it right into fruiting conditions and then one with a week or two of consolidation or I guess until it starts pinning. So much to do and learn.

I wouldn't put into fruiting conditions immediately unless you add a casing layer.

Yes-as soon as I spawn my tubs they are set up with polyfil in the holes. No taping. I'm going on my 12th tub like this and it works great...

Pastywhyte said: Spawn runs are faster in lower CO2. I did a spawn run in 4 days by doing spawn run in fruiting conditions and saw pins 10 days after spawning. Lots of people are doing it now. It also seems to keep blobs with PE down.
Drawbacks are less even flushing patterns.
^ I have not had any extremely uneven flushing patterns yet. All my fruits are usually ready to harvest in a 24 hour period. Sometimes 'overnight' but still in about a 24 hour period.

The casing layer could help your substrate from drying out too quickly if conditions are not dialed in rather nicely... I don't usually let my tubs go past the second or third flush. It's not worth my time when I have another set of jars ready to be dumped in.
