Any scrappers here? Is the price of steel worth it?

So I have access to a good amount of steel I can just haul away legally. The best I have is a pickup truck and my own muscle power loading it up. There is some copper which I am going to stash away but it is 90% steel that people would be happy to be rid of. Like say enough to fill a 53' trailer as a mess of rusty metal. How much could that be?

I've done a little scrapping In my day, and a trailers worth of metal I'd say, depending on ur states prices and shit, could easily rake in 300+ dollars, buts that's just a good faith estimate.

I don't understand that. I am seeing like 5c a pound for magnetic stainless. So we are talking about $100 a ton here. Is that worth it if it's just all piled up in one place?

where im from, you can separate the good steel from the crap steel. I got about 150 bucks for a huge trailer full of mixed. It took me several days to get it all together though. Not always worth it.

Do they do that like on a belt with a series of magnets, or is there a trick to tell good steel from bad steel?

rebar and scraggly bits of poop metal is bad steel, the really heavy thick shit is good steel usually as far as i knew. you have to separate it yourself into piles for them to examine.

Unprepared Iron $60/NT #2 Prepared (Cut under 3'x18″) $90/NT #1 Plate (Cut under 5'x18″) $95/NT
A neighbor would load up a 16' trailer like 8' high behind his loaded pickup with steel he prepped by burning it in a campfire. It was all dismantled electric stoves and stuff That's all I know.

This is like industrial grade 1/4" sheet metal 70s 80s American machinery from a factory/machine shop. Pretty sure it's good steel it sits out and doesn't rust much.

I've never heard of good/bad steel part, but I do know where I'm at if it's cut into shorter chunks it is worth more as it saves them the time of having to cut it up themselves.
If you have a good load it can be worth it. I'm in the construction business and whenever we do demolition/renovations with a lot of old scrap steel we get some good kickbacks. $300-400 extra a week

I didn't wanna make my own thread for this so sorry to hijack this one but...
Anyways, is there any real money to be made from scrapping out a large furnace or two? I started to wonder if it was worth it when I was looking to see if they had motors. Didn't know what they actually were because there was never really any reason to crawl back there and give it a better inspection, but I'm on the prowl for a good sized motor and that is reason enough to check. So I will be keeping the motors (assuming they're good) but the rest is just junk to me.
They're pretty old. No idea how old, they were in the attic when we moved in (one is just off to the side, I guess when that one went bad they didn't want to bother trying to get it out and just shoved it aside, the other one is definitely newer and in it's installation position). I mention the age becuase I know things like that have evolved over time and it's age could make all the difference in whether it'd be worth it or not. The older one is pretty big (like probably even bigger than a fridge) and I understand why they would choose to just leave it up there when it came time to replace it. But if there's some decent money to be made (20, 30 dollars?) I might make the effort to scrap it out completely. If not I'm just leaving them where they are and taking the motors.

For the amount of effort you need to put out compared to the $ yield it's not worth it
You bust your ass cutting up cars in the woods or dragging shit hundreds of yards for 50$
An old boss used to accumulate metal for three four months ata time and turn it in after making a HUGE pile and would net 300-350$

Steel ain't worth shit guys. Call your local metal yard to confirm. Some places don't even want it anymore. Stainless Steel copper and aluminum is where the monies are at.

Just scrapped my 1999 subaru legacy. When I called a couple months ago they were gonna give me 50 bucks for it. I really am not good or interested in cars, and having one just laying around in addition to my current car which is barely used as is was just inconvenient, but I held off and finally scrapped it a few weeks ago for 150 so it looks like prices are slightly better than where they were a few months prior.
Idk if that helps but that's my only experience scrapping anything.

It seems like you could have or should have gotten more then $150 for the car, unless maybe they picked it up with a wrecker themselves. I'm not sure what the net weight of the car is but if you drove it over the scales I'd assume at least $200 - $300. The weight of every vehicle is listed on a sticker inside the drivers door. You can call your local scrap yards and ask how much they are junking cars for; give them the weight of your car and everything.

I know I definitely could've. It was even still totally driveable - the guy from the scrap yard drove it there. It just started getting too expensive to fix, it was not street legal(about 2k in work to pass inspection, which I put towards a newer car instead) and it was uninsured by the time I scrapped it because I just transferred my policy to my new car. I probably could've unloaded it on someone who wanted something to tinker with for 300-400 dollars, but I really just needed to get rid of it.
Like, I barely use the car I have now because it lives 2 hours away and keeping a car where I am is waaay more trouble than it's worth. But I spoke with my mechanic, spoke with a couple other people, and maybe if I was a bit savvier I could've negotiated more, but everyone I spoke to told me that I would get next to nothing for it at a scrap yard...so I was pleasantly surprised to get 150 in my pocket from it, as bad as it sounds.

Yeah, he pretty much just picked up your car and drove it over the scales himself for at least $150. The brighter side is you cleared that trouble off your plate and got a little more then you were expecting for no real effort except maybe calling ol' boy to come pick it up.

Yup. Had not the time nor the patience to give many shits while I already had another working vehicle. I consider myself lucky.
I live in the middle of a big city. Keeping a car where I am right now is completely unnecessary and very expensive, as you really have to rent a spot in a parking garage monthly to keep one here without paying even more in parking tickets, possible towing bills, and dealing with the headache of just trying to find parking in general.

yeah but it wasn't street legal, and I wasn't sure how much that would hamper prospective buyers. I thought about craigslisting it but honestly I was willing to get less in return for more convenience and getting it out of my poor parent's driveway, because they already house my other car free of charge too.

4 kilos or just under $20 of copper. Honestly I was thinking it would be a bit more. Definitely not going to waste time stripping wire by hand. Someone told me I can put it in a fire or burn off the insulation with a butane torch. Anyone have experience with that?

I saw a cheap to make wire stripper awhile back that's never really left my mind. It's basically just a block of wood with a hole drilled in it and a blade put into the opening. Push the wire through until it's a few inches through then go to the other side and just pull it through and it cuts open the casing and you can easily just pull the wire out.

That one is a lot more complicated than the one I saw.
I can't find the video I saw but it's essentially this, just wood instead of metal plate.
