That time i almost ate lepiota
    #23653819 - 09/17/16 05:52 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

around two years ago towards the end of fall there was a large group of large lepiotas fruiting around a stop sign. i thought they were amanita amerimuscaria. it had rained very heavily, so i thought the rain washed away the color. the cap had a red center, and the rest was white, like this. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Lepiota_cristata_20070819w.jpg

i assumed the red center was the original color, and the rest had been washed out by the heavy rain.

i had read something that stated that fly agaric can always be identified on the spot, with no lookalikes if done correctly. from what i remember, the criteria was warts on the cap, a bulbous volva, and concentric rings above the volva. now i was pretty new to shrooming at the time and all of those things checked out, especially the concentric rings above the volva, i felt like a pro mycologist for being in the know on that.

andyway i had taken a huge one inside and almost started baking it, when i decided if i was going to do fly agaric, i would get good ones online and not waste my time and eat undigestable shrooms in the process. i have a friend that used to live in WA and he found and ate a real fly agaric with barely an effect, so i just wasnt feeling it. i left it with the rest of them where i found it, and went back inside.

years later after learning more about mushrooms, yea that was lepiota, i wouldve died. the only reason i didnt eat them was because reliably stronger ones were available online. whenever i see the menacingly red STOP sign they were fruiting around, i cringe at the irony. lol
