If we look at what we are made of and take stock of the life within, then we arrive at the humbling conclusion that we are made of more things that aren't us than are. Why is there something rather than nothing? Our minds cant comprehend infinity yet our observations of the universe lead us to the sober conclusion that there was never a "beginning" nor will there ever be an "end" to it all. The ego gets a boost when we say "look at what we know." The spirit gets a boost when we realize that we know nothing.
