What size are your Sab holes?

so I've been reading reading slightly bigger holes are better than smaller but how much is too big?
I feel a lot more comfortable with 6" holes rather than 5" and recently cut even slightly bigger than 6" holes to get the feel of that.
It was awesome not bumping my arms on the edge constantly but I felt a lot less safe with so much exposure to open air....
So am I ok with 6" at least or is that pushing it?

6" should work fine, doing your work towards the back. I believe mine are 5", wouldn't mind if hey are a little bigger. I'm sure in your researching you found larger armholes lessons the piston effect, stirring up less air than smaller arm holes. I preach it all the time, a bigger SAB with larger arm holes helped with my satellite contam problem immensely.
I'm glad you started this thread because it may be part of someone's issues and they may be unaware. I don't believe I would go any bigger than 6", but someone mentioned just cutting one large oval, that may work good and I've seen some built out of plexi glass that there was just an open gap about 5" tall or so all the way across, probably worked good.

No such thing as too big. Some people work with a 5 sided box.

Thanks for pointing this out. I never realized that was actually the case. I will be constructing my next SAB with larger holes next time

This is the 105 qt sterilite with slightly bigger than 6" holes.
Like I said I really like it and I should note that I do use a bath towel under the sab for the floor and I ended up not using the paper towels on the bottom of the holes as I used to use them as padding when I had smaller and more jagged holes.
Thanks for the reassurance and giving me the answer that I wanted for a change.

My SAB holes are just holes punched through a tub. I don't know what size lol. I don't think it really matters.

It does matter. I always say 6" minimum for the reduction of piston effect from your arms going and out. That cobbled with a still room makes for a VERY still box.

I meant in regard to "largeness". I know that Mad. Guess I worded it wrong.

I have no problem with this, I'm sure a 5 sided box would work much better than my old SAB with super small armholes lol. I'd say 6" is probably about just right, like you said the room need to have still air as well, closed vents ect. I have been thinking about building a huge 5 1/2 sided box out of plexi glass, pretty much just half the front blocked like a sneeze guard lol.

Like Sri's right? That's a good design .
@mushie I was pretty sure you knew what you were talking about, but yeah the wording of it was off for me, so I had to say what I found is proper. Think of all the noobs we just saved when they search this exact thing, knowing now the proper way to do things. Assuming they read this properly :/

Yeah no doubt. Say one thing wrong and you'll have them all thinking it's okay to inoculate open air. :/.

I use 4.5 inch holes. Works pretty well. I definitely wouldn't go smaller because the piston effect makes perfect sense, plus I like putting my material through the holes instead of lifting the whole box up.

If you're gonna melt the holes, do it outside! You don't wanna breath that shit in. Just saying
