Agar vs. Liquid Myc
    #2365223 - 02/21/04 09:26 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

What are pros and cons of both and what do you prefer? Is agar worth messing with if you don't have a glovebox or hood? Thanks in advance...

Lixid myc is for fast colonization of an isolate and agar is to isolate that isolate. SO ther 2 diffrent teks with 2 diffrent goals. You should have a flowhood or glove box/bag to begin with but you dont NEED one. I made a glovebag and use it when doing allot of G2G but when im doing just a few jars i just turn all fans off close all teh windows and then a few hours later walk in slowly with a bandana over my face to stop drafts and do the G2G. Once you get the mycellium growing you dont need everyting to be as sterile as say when your knocking up with spores becase the growth is already there and it colonizes much faster allowing little time for contams. But having good controled temps for colonization is key when not working with a 100% sterile substrate.

Contams are more detectable with agar. Agar is a good way to go if u want clean myc from a dirty print. You can peroxidate agar. You can cut out a strain with agar.
Gettig a good isolate pays off if youre into it but for most its more pain than its worth if all you want is a shroom stash.
