Question / Suggestion about ID and TI responses
    #23651701 - 09/16/16 10:13 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Hi, Im new to the website, but ive been lurking around here for a little while. I think its awesome that there is a place non-experts can go for mushroom IDs. You guys are providing a public service here, thank you!

I have been doing my homework on mushroom hunting and identification. This website has been a huge help. I especially like the ID requests because its a great way to test my knowledge (which is still very limited).

My question/suggestion is, when the TI's are providing an ID, could the TI let us know what they see or did not see that led them to their conclusion? nothing too detailed, just a short comment like "its not bruising blue" or "stem should be white" or "spore print is too rusty, should be purple to black" or etc.

Either way, thanks again for what you guys do!

We try to be generous with what we know. Sometimes that gets waffly like a few of my IDs and you only wanted something you can look up, and it's inviting more explanation and subsequent disagreement than immediate recognition or recognition having sussed the genus and spent ages looking at online keys and photos of possible species in that part of the world and learned very little but got OP their ID, really warrants.

First of all, these are very common things to be pointed out when trying to identify - color, shape, texture, size, odor.

But I usually assume that people hunting for mushrooms will gather the available knowledge on what they're after, prior to hunting.
So when it comes to the more common species - which are largely overrepresented in identification requests - there will be quite
good descriptions available online, like mushroomexpert, first-nature etc. I usually add links when it seems favourable to the
identification of a given species. Rare or undescribed species might attract less, but much more focused attention.

As for the examples you give about bruising and stem color, these, and a number of other macroscopic features, might be subject
to variability - depending on species, of course.

Species that are prone to variation will usually be described as such (like Laccaria laccata and Neolentinus lepideus, for instance).

All in all, when it comes to identifying mushrooms, the species description available (if adequate) might sometimes overrule
judgment made from a picture. I remember many cases where I have come to false conclusions based on comparing my own
pictures with ones online. Details in descriptions have many times made me aware of details I overlooked in pictures, or details
unable to be observed in a picture.

First research the name given, after that is done if there is anything that is left unclear please ask.
