Water Filter ?s

I finally caved and bought some supply to filter my drinking water. Since I wanted to save money on *Big Filter* products.. I bought Actived Charcoal (AC) to filter out impurities and Bone Char (BC) powder to filter out flouride (not up for debate on flouride +/- info) from my tap water.
I used a few PVC fittings and some aluminum screen to rig together a small pipe type contraption starting with (AC) running/cleansing first then (BC) cleansing directly after the (AC); all in one flow.
The two problems I'm having is.. Is it normal for my water to taste a little burnt? . I assume so since both of these mixtures are of carbon..
But the main problem that's pissing me off is speed. It took over 10 minutes to filter one gallon. I see that a huge problem especially when I'm in a hurry...
And lastly, so I've heard.. that one can detox with this stuff? I'm interested in that also but wondering if anyone else has tried it? Apparently one eats a small dose of (AC), once daily to cleanse the body?..
I would also eventually like to ditch the aluminum screen.. or atleast plate it with gold or silver which I can and probably will do unless I find a better method of filtering..
Tell me moar!

that sounds like a pain in the dick.
why not just buy a filtered tap and call it a day? theyre like a 100 bucks for the kit+the first filters, and then its like 50$ for replacement filters ever 6 months. basically 100$ a year for filtered water on tap.

I was thinking about it for a few years actually before I finally decided. It's not as big a pain as it sounds. Because I originally wanted a reverse-osmosis filter along with the charcoal in one set up but too expensive for me atm. I enjoy building things and saving money too so . Only costed a total of about 30-40$. This will last a year easy too.
Was just wondering of different contraptions of filtering really which is why I asked.

You should be able to buy in line water filters for under $60, it all depends on the type of filter you use, some just remove rust and silt while others take the bacteria and sulphers out. Your water shouldnt taste burnt, sounds like an improper filter or maybe its not flowing at a fast enough rate and getting carbon in your water. Its hard to determine the problem not being able to check it out and inspect it for myself (I plumb) but the flow rare should be around 35 psi. Is your flow only slow through that filter or in every fixture in oyur house? The bladder of your expansion take could be punctured or leaking which will lower your flow rate.
A reverse osmosis system is pretty expensive (around $ 300 +) but it is very reliable and worth it in the long run.

Buy a PUR filter that you screw on the faucet for $30 and call it a day.

the AC filter on my fridge says to flush it with 4 gallons before consumption. it also says it requires a minimum of 30psi and a max of 120psi.

Yeah I was just about to post that. When you put one of those inline water filters on, you're supposed to run a lot of water through it first. As for the flow rate, it's on how you built this system. I dunno how you'd improve it but the inline filter didn't really have any effect on the flow rate for us. I'm pretty sure it basically uses the same system more or less (AC and other stuff, probably some really small micron screens). Maybe you have stuff too packed in there and water isn't passing through freely. But I think it could also be the size of pipes you went with. I'm not sure if different size pipes/hoses without any resistance would have a noticeable effect but if the pressure isn't high enough (too big of a pipe/hose) before the filter, I could see it impeding the gallon per minute rate.

I just bought the LG oem filter for my fridge, waiting for it to show up. I see the generics work, but they are not subject to the same testing (although I'd bet they are made side by side) and they were like half the price.
But as someone who didn't realize the fridge filter needed to be changed, I've been rocking the same one for 5 years, lol.
Looking forward to *maybe* better water and ice. Hopefully! Not that it was bad, but now that I found out about changing the filter I haven't had fridge water or ice for about a week.
I might cut it open, and see what a 5 year filter looks like. (minimum, who knows if/when the previous home owner changed it, but it's a nice ass fridge, and he was pretty good at keeping up on house things before I bought this place)

i'm sure it's pretty nasty. you're supposed to change them out every 6 months. how could you not taste the funky tap water?

KDF filtration. Fuck everything else. Charcoal filtration will really only help with taste and smell but won't reduce PPM significantly and I certainly wouldn't use burned animal bones for any purpose, much less my drinking water. That's filthy.

Activated charcoal isn't derived from animal bones. Activated carbon is carbon produced from carbonaceous source materials such as nutshells, coconut husk, peat, wood, coir, lignite, coal, and petroleum pitch.
and from my reading, KDF should be used in conjuction with Activated charcoal to make up for KDF's shortcomings.

You pretty much re-iterated my points. I'm not confusing bone char with activated charcoal. OP is using bone char to filter water, and I stated I wouldn't that myself; it's an ethical thing for me. I never said AC is ineffective, but that it only helps with taste and smell while not really removing other impurities--implying it's not a primary filtration solution unless the only goal is better tasting water without regard to other impurities. KDF with or without AC is nice because it doesn't waste water like other filtration methods, lasts a long time without maintenance, and works for an entire house at regular pressure. An AC filter would be for taste and smell in any filtration system, and works better for longer when used to supplement primary filtration.
