What would you do?

Last week I was in the bank waiting in line at the front of the queue. There was an old lady being served in front of me. I could tell she was loaded and she also seemed a bit ditzy (as with most 70+yr olds). When she left and it was my turn to be served, I realised she'd left a £20 note in the tray. Without even thinking about it I ran after her to return the money, but I could easily have kept it because nobody else saw it and she was almost gone. I am so unbelievably poor. I was in there to change a load of 1p 2p 5ps into a £5 note so I could buy some food. I could have really used that money and she probably wouldn't even realise she'd lost anything.
So the question is, what would you have done if you were in my situation? I don't mean what would YOU have done (because you probably have more money than me). If you were totally broke, what would you have done? If I had a job with a steady income I wouldn't even be questioning this because something similar has happened before and I didn't think much of it.
Was this supposed to be my money? Was God throwing me a bone and I rejected it? Am I missing out on good fortune because of my morals? Will I always be poor because of this?
Sorry if this is the wrong forum BTW.

There is no God, don't be a dick.
You chose to not be a dick, good job.

Thats a question only you can answer, do you feel good about what you did or do you feel bad about it?
Personally I'd of probably kept it if I was totally broke and they didnt need it as much as me, obviously the right thing is to return it but sometimes you have to do whatever you can to get by as sad as it is, in todays world assholes go far and nice people get shit on most of the time.
No you wont always be poor because you do the right things, just keep looking for a job and bust your ass when you get one and hopefully it works out, just dont lose hope and stick to what you feel is right, even if that means it doesnt work out the best for you all the time

You did the right thing. God's gifts do not come in the form of currency.
You will be rewarded, in time.

You believe there is no God. I know there is. Not the biblical God who tortures innocent people, but the higher-fractal-upscale sum-of-all-things God. Thanks for replying though.

I felt good at the time but I had some mushrooms a few days later and I was thinking about this and it made me cry.
I'm not out of work because I can't find a job. I'm on the sick at the moment due to an unfortunate event last year.
Thanks

Well this has been my outlook for the past 8 years or so, but I'm getting a bit impatient now waiting for something good to happen.

Its just paper. Give a man food and he will eat for the night. Teach a man to trap/hunt he will eat for a lifetime. Also read up on what roots are edible and what are not. There is food all around you. At the very least try watching what the wildlife eat and copy them. Good luck op

My experience: Some art thief tried to lift a mural from a condemned building and apparently it proved too big (8'x16' in two pieces) for the get-a-way vehicle and was abandoned, so I called up the Librarian who contacted the Mayor to have it re-situated. The similarities are mindboggling.
Ergo the old lady is a thief who profits from good Samaritans.
That's a 'paronomastic extrapolation' for those who can follow it.

I would have absolutely done the same in your situation and I consider you a hero for a day for doing it.
God bless you man.

Since the atheists talk like they're right I;m gonna do the same.
It is the exact opposite. God tested you whether you would remain honest also in a time of poverty and need. You stayed righteous and you will be rewarded for it.
If you stick a potato in a bucket of soil and water it daily, you'll have a bucket full of potatoes by the time the beautiful plant wilts, by the way.
Less laborious, I urge you to get a big bag of rice in your house. Plain white rice, nothing fancy. If you shop right you can have a 50 lbs bag for $25. Put that rice in a foiodgrade closable bucket. You can get these for free at small fast food places, they get their sauces in these buckets. If you got rice, and it easily keeps 2-3 years, you ca ALWAYS fill your tummy with something good even in times of no money. That is VERY reassuring. Its how they live in much of Africa.

I will do. It's just a bit daunting going out on your own in a situation like that. Could do with a guide really to show me the way. I will look into it though, and next time I'm out in the woods I will keep an eye out for edibles. I'm thinking of going on a mushroom hunting day which they have in my area every autumn, but that costs money. Been wanting to do this for a few years actually but whenever I have money, I'd be in work. Catch 22 lol.

Thank you (for both posts). That means a lot knowing I did the right thing. I will consider growing my own food and stocking up on cheap protein.
I found £10 in a taxi a few months ago but kept it. It was down the side of the front passenger seat. It obviously belonged to the previous customer, but if I gave it to the driver there's no guarantee it would be returned to the owner. I like to think there's a difference between the two scenarios.

For proteins, rice and beans go a long way and complement each other. If you add rice to beans you get high qulity protein.

If the final recipient of the art proves to be the originator of the heist (provable thru the accomplices involved) then an undeniable case can be made, thru the event comparison, for the existence of order/God in the world.
