My Homemade Incubator! (pictures below)

Okay, So this is my first post ever on this sight. So i hope this is posted in the right place. I just wanted to show everyone my homemade incubator. All i did was pretty much followed Frank's Incubator tek except i used two 18 gallon tubs instead of the 30 gallon tubs he used. Also im using a 100W aquarium heater because i could not find a 50W version. Itll be a few days before the incubator will be in use so i put a thermometer inside so i can get an idea of how warm it will be. If its too hot im going to order a 50W heater. Other than that, Everything else is exactly how Frank made his. Im gonna be using a grain tek with a coco coir and vermiculite casing.
Guys, i gotta tell ya, im pretty excited. Not only is this the first time i've posted but this will be my first grow as well! Now, i know how most people feel about a new grower using an incubator, but i have a lot of confidence. My buddy has been growing for a couple years now,and i have gotten a lot of advise and knowledge from him about the whole process. I've also been reading and watching A LOT over the past month or so about everything from sterilizing to fruiting. Im going to be using homemade self healing injection port lids too. i feel that will drastically increase my chance of success. Only time will tell though. Im planning on following everything to a T. Wish me luck!

I havnt put in the Polyfill yet, but the silicone part is done.

Well, as long as you know that most of the vets will be giggling that you are using an incubator (because it's a waste of time, money, and also, colonizing Myc benefits from light, not darkness). If you're okay with us cackling of ridiculous incubators and can take a few jokes about raising reptiles, you're okay in my book.
Read up and learn all you can. Welcome to the Shroomery dude.

So, first, and most obvious question, what are your ambient temps that you feel the need to use this incubator?
Also "buddies that have been growing for years" are constantly a source of bad advice for new people, I've noticed. Often times these people are stuck in the same techniques and ideas they thought were good 10 years ago when incubators and colonizing in the dark were still a thing people thought was normal.

My house never gets below 68 degrees. Especially in the summer time. Also this incubator is for colonizing jars. Im hoping itll stay around 80 degrees in there. We will see though. and if anything ill just keep the lid off. I have a 4 ft florescent light i can put over it.

If your house never gets below 68F, put your jars on a shelf with ambient light. I guarantee they will colonize twice as healthy. 80f is just gonna cause your jars to have bacteria a lot more often, and the darkness will actually cause it to colonize a bit slower. Just saying. Incubators are a complete waste.

68 degrees is a perfectly fine temperature to colonize jars
80 is not advisable in my opinion. the jars create their own heat, so inside it will be more like 85+.

65F-75F are significantly better colonization and fruiting temps than 80F. Bacteria LOVES high temps and cubes don't really care that much either way. Any benefit gained by the slightly faster colonization speeds of warmer temps is far outpaced by the bacterial bloom that often happens in temps at or above 80F.
And yeah get some light on those things.
This is what I mean by "buddies that have grown for years". Some people do a thing for years and never change a thing about it from the very first time they got what they considered "Success". They don't know that success can look a lot better than they've allowed themselves to be comfortable with. Maybe you should point your buddy in this direction as well.
You can definitely get some mushrooms colonizing at 80F in the dark, but you may not get so many mushrooms that they're a fucking forest you can't see through. Bacteria is the #1 yield killer.
I need to get some more grows going so I can post different pictures.

Welcome brother. You'll get used to every one criticizing your efforts!Don't take it personal. Since you've gone to the trouble already you might as well try it anyway. You made a choice in methods, now follow it through. In the end you'll come up with method that works (or not)You are going to make mistakes just like the rest of us. My house sits @ 50 deg.F all winter ,without an incubator nothing grows.Good Luck.

^ in this case I think the incubator could be counter productive
I would ditch the incubator if your room temp if 65F or up.
Also, if you are using grains the silicone really isn't nessEsary. Just crack open the lids in your still air box to inoculate. If youre gunna work with grains gotta use a SAB amyways!

What if we told everyone this? "Ehhh I know you didn't sterilize those jars but go ahead and inoc em with your only spores and just do it right next time instead. "
"Well, you chose to inoculate LC with dirty spores in open air, so go ahead and use it to inoc 30 quarts of grain, follow through bro."

You will only learn by making your own mistakes. My house sits @ 50 f what's the word on that? The truth is , only by trying the best I can will I move on or not. And my choices will be proven by success or failure.Do your best to sort through the shit and move on.But you have to make mistakes its a good sign you're doing something as opposed to nothing..Now he has tubs for mono's.

Uh, no, that's the stubborn way out. You can also learn by reading, doing things correctly, having discussions, using visual aids, and a ton of other different ways. Making a mistake is avoidable. You don't have to do stupid shit just to learn how not to do stupid shit.
If honestly believe what you're saying I feel sorry for you. Sure would suck if the only legacy anybody ever left behind was a string of failures.

I would use an incubator if I lived in a cabin out in the mountains and needed to grow during the dead of winter, but other than that it isn't really worth it. Colonizing at room temp is the way to go, but if you ever need to move your colonizing jars into the garage during the dead of winter the incubator may come in handy
