Cakes not pinning, please help
    #2364831 - 02/21/04 07:44 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Ok, I got rid of the cob web stuff and have 5 1/2 pint cakes of BRF and Verm totally covered in white. Heres the kicker, 1 cake has 2 beautifull Equadorian PC's growing and are at about 3" now and are as healthy as they can be. BUT, the other 4 cakes have none and they have been in there for over 2 weeks. The cake with the shrooms pinned those 2 out within 4 days but not the rest. And, why only 2? I have 2 measly but beautiful shrooms. I have an ultrasonic, 1/2 tubing, 2 gallon bottle, rubbermaid tub, 1/4 " wire mesh and a 40 watt light outside the tub and my Hygrometer says I'm at 90% humidity stable and 75 degrees stable. Why oh why can't these cakes grow something?

is that hygrometer of yours calobrated right?

if only two mushies poop out of one cake everything is not right.

turn the heat up a very little and double check that humidity. are the cakes puffy or smooth like when they were birthed. puffy like cotton balls means thay are getting humidty(probably to much) and smooth means they might not be getting enough.

are the cakes getting water some how?

They are almost velvet like. A little fuzzy maybe in some spot but the fuzz is maybe 1/16" is all and looks normal but maybe not? What can I use to heat the tub from the inside without damaging anything? Oh and the cakes even though the myc is smoothish the cakes have little bumps all around but they have'nt changed any. The hygro reads the same as one used by a freind in a green house at 80% so I assumed it would be ok at 90. How can I be sure it's correct other than that? I don't want to buy another lol.

How do I get water to the cakes? I found out about having a hole in the middle with verm inside to inject water after I started.

put it in a wet cloth towel and it should read 99-100%. it sounds like the cakes are under good humidity if they are velvety(i like that discription). a fish tank heater in a jar of water works if you have the room. just watch the temp the first time so it does not get to hot.

i still ask: what is feeding the cakes water?

double end casing. putting the cake in some verm and topping the cake with more verm. if you don't the cakes dry out and die and have no source of water for fruits.

Ok, so how about filling the lids with verm, setting the cakes on them and then put 1/4" on top? Like icing the top of a cake? And then what, drip water on the verm on top and inject water into the lid? Not sure about this part as this is my first time...as if you have'nt noticed lol. Thanks so much for your help.

BTW, think I should bake the verm before using? Oh and I just looked at some pics of this casing idea and saw foil being used so thats what I'll do. But do I add water or rely on condensation?

what you said exactly. lids work good, but can leak if to much water is added. styrofoam bowls cut down to 1" work great and you can throw them away at the end. wet the verm till its like puddy NOT dripping. if dripping just put a little more verm to absorb extra. if you add to much water to the bottom layer you can tilt the lid a little and stick the syringe tip to the bottom and suck up the extra. assuming your cakes are not dead this will spring them to life. this sounds like it was your problem all along. i wish you success. ask more questions if you have more.

oh ya, water about every three days. really when ever the verm dries out.
