Yo so I was just outside blazing up and I caught movement out of the corner of my eye, looked down and there's this large insect just crawling slowly across the porch right past my foot, I looked closer and it looked to me like a goddamned massive hornet

I managed to catch a picture of the bugger, I didn't wanna get too close cuz it seemed like it was getting kinda pissed off so this was the best I could do

Anybody have any clue wtf that creature is based on the picture? It was probably like at least an inch long I'd say, if not bigger

I wonder if it came from the giant hive up the hill by the cemetery
I was scouting it with binoculars yesterday, this hive is absolutely gigantic, like it's almost big enough for a fully-grown man to wrap his arms all the way around it

Upon further research it seems that cicada killer hornets are solitary creatures, so it couldn't have come from the huge hive up the hill
I don't know what kind of buggers built that monolith but they're definitely some sort of brownish wasps/hornets, one of them tried to chase me down while I was spying on the hive from afar and he was pretty big but not as big as this one

Yeah I believe cicada killers live in be ground. I could be wrong about that. I've seen many over the years. Don't think I've ever been stung by one.
Fun fact: wasps are assholes thing time of year, because they get drunk as fuck on fermented berries.

The other week I was cutting the grass and a dipstick wasp flew in my hair and got stuck and stung my scalp like 5 times, I ran all the way upstairs to the main bathroom and only then did I manage to get it out, then it started coming after me again so I locked it in the bathroom

Which was weird because he was trying to kill me before

Had a nest of European Hornets in a shed next door...they were inside the wooden siding ...had a huge nest. Attacked my dog once...thankful he had a thick coat because they swarmed him. One got me through the pant leg...they are huge.
After dark with some raid wasp & hornet did the trick.

I was walking outside one day and saw a huge junebug flying by, then a massive hornet wargarbled his ass mid air, it was horrific and majestic all at the same time, my mind instantly switched to David Attenborough narrating the scene.
I swear that hornet was as big as my thumb, looked like one of those Japanese giant hornets.

Cicadas live underground (Up to 17 years before emerging to the surface!!) not sure about the cicada hornet tho. They are fucking big tho, and wouldnt want to get stung by one. I stepped on a mud wasp nest before and that was not fun at all to say the least haha.

Cicada killers dig a tunnel where they drag a cicada, lay an egg on it and then seal it up and the larve eats the still living cicada. One female cicada killer can dig dozens of tunnels over the summer.
Cicada killers only prey on annual cicadas. Periodical cicadas only come out every 13 or 17 years, so they aren't reliable for the wasps life cycle.

I'm usually pretty good at finding out what a bug is. When I started gardening I spent a lot of time trying to identify everything I saw so I knew if it was something I needed to take care of or something beneficial or what, so I got a lot of practice.
There are other related species, I dunno if it's for sure that exact one, picture doesn't show enough detail to be certain.
