Need help in the jungle!!

I after reading the related post I see that you guys are tired of the "Is there a substitute for vermiculite?" question. That said I finally was able to smuggle some syringes down to remote Costa Rica, where I live. Thinking that vermiculite would be available I didn't bring any back. Now after an exhausting search of the country, I can't find it anywhere. So it is not that I am to cheap or to stupid to go to the garden store, I am out of luck and need advice on my best option for growing. I am leaning towards the whole grain brown rice method, but have access to perlite, pumice, lava rock(we use in hydroponics), cork, coco fiber, just not vermiculite. I would love any advice on which method to use.
Thanks!!!

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Your right I can have vermiculite shipped, it will cost about $100 and take a month and I will have to drive 2 hours mostly 4x4 to the post office to pick up the package. rust me I did my homework. The 10L bag of perlite I found was $42. So I am just hoping for an alternative. I will read up on agar. Is it worth it to even try the whole grain rice method?
Thanks again for the help, just hoping for a few shrooms this year

He's looking for a tek that would fit his needs with no verm.
I'm thinking straw would be your best choice, you would need to get a rig together, propane burner and a 55 gallon drum. And obviously getting your cultures started on agar before making spawn, the problem would be finding agar there, any Asian stores around there?

I will see if I can find you a good tek, but basically you are going to heat your water to 160 and bathe the straw for an hour at that temp and then pull it out and cool it down. In most countries with limited resources straw is the main substrate for cultivation, commercial and hobby.

You got it! No shortage of straw or cow shit where I am standing, but if you want a snickers bar you have to drive an hour and they might have one left. Thanks again for your help.

If you have a pressure cooKer and acess to graitrn or wild bird seed for spawn there are plenty of substrates to use without vermiculite.
If you can't get verm you cant do PF tek. But thats really only where youre limited
Plain coir works well too if you can find that. But manure and straw are probably what you will have the most acess too yea?

That's how this all started. We have a very short season here, we get one shot 2-3 weeks in June( at least where I am ) and very small quantities. Not like Florida where I used to pick grocery bags in a hour. Anyway this year was a bust, early rainy season came and no shrooms for anyone. So begins the quest to grow my own. The down side is that it can be a real challenge to find even some of simplest supplies, and if you do find them it's usually crazy expensive.
I do have a PC, and I can get bird seed, already built a glove box, syringes will be here next week and the adventure begins!!!!
It's awesome to get so much support!!!

Although shroom supply does have an awesome looking inflatable glove box that looks like it would totally kick ass for knocking plates dude. Seriously. I want it. 30 bucks.

When I was still a mega noob I bought one of those... Literally 2x more expensive than a SAB and 100x more difficult to work with.
Binned it a few months ago. Waste of plastic.

I can always use my SAB, but I put all kinds of shit in there. I like the convenience of that thing, seems like it'd be good specifically for putting spores to plates without worrying about bacteria hopping in.

Well, the bacteria that isn't already in the spores that is. But if it's crap, it's crap. I'll take your word for it. Just want to find something a little more controlled for plate inoc than my SAB but a little less expensive than a flowhood.

Yeah man, the gloves don't even stay connected to the bag very well.
They're hard as hell to reattach too.

How you gonna let them sell you on a gimmick that don't work dude? Anything that sounds a little too good or convenient to be true usually is. Well unless you're naturally incredulous like me.

Lol I'm not. Taking your guys word for it. I'll still with my perfectly fine SAB made from a 56qt tub.
