So surely you 'give your mates shit' or stir them up sometimes? You are still coming down under right? We are famous for giving our mates shit so that's a kind of trolling, right? Are you trying to define the lines between stirring/teasing/bullying/harassing and maybe you could put trolling in there too? There are a lot of things to consider before you put a label on it. Sometimes trolling can = bullying but it would depend on a lot of things.... anyway good thread.

I'm not sure if JSB really gets our style of humour. He's left me multiple nasty ratings on here because he interprets much of what I say in the most negative possible light.

I think negative attention is fulfilling for trolls.
Like how many people are hooked on drama, trolls love drama.
It helps them feels powerful.
(just like how kids often enjoy throwing rocks off a freeway overpass.)
This is true.
I have seen people post some serious questions on here before, then you see people in other threads in different forums make fun of that person for asking a serious question, trying to bait the person into that thread to "melt" as they call it.
I will try to joke with people to try and mellow out the situation if I see this happening, you know use humor to defuse a bomb.
I understand we all have bad days, and sometimes we might lash out without thinking, especially on a site where we can't see the other persons reaction, but I don't understand why it matters so much to be correct about internet drama which holds no weight in the real world.
One thing I learned in the past with heroin addiction, is misery loves company. Every time I tried to get clean and told my friends I was trying to do so, they would try harder and harder to get me to use with them. So this logic applies to trolls, they see someone doing well, and are miserable with their own lives, so they try to drag others down to be miserable with them.

So that would make 99.9% of the people on the planet 'pathetically insecure losers'? Sounds about right, I'm definitely in that 99.9% at times, when the words hit the right spot.
if it's 99.9% then yes just like it's pathetic to punish someone for using a harmless drug or being a certain color it's equally pathetic to punish someone for using harmless words just because of personal interpretation
we're responsible for ourselves first and foremost the need to be responsible for others words is a project based in projection IMO

Trolling is the art of deception and it's defiantly nothing new. Just because a snake sheds its skin does not mean it's not a snake. It always has and most likely always will be a valuable survival mechanism.
A Crocodile can sit for hours in one position camouflaged amongst the water just waiting for the unknowing mammal to come along then snap.
With humans its all about intelligence so when x amount of individuals take the bait and the other ones know whats going on...

Crazy and very interesting. So what do you think about 'selfishness' ? Without trying to dress it up that's what you are getting at right?
I think its worth considering that for the most part we have been conditioned against selfishness (at least I have)but putting your own sanity and happiness as the no.1 priority seems healthy. Religion is for the peasants lol.
And I disagree with you Victor it's totally worth punching someone in the head over a joke made at your expense , especially when they are trying to use you to boost their social status. This is what i would call returning the favor lol. Although it very well could backfire or possibly lead to mating with more females.

Amen! Which is why some people thrive on negative attention.
The anonymity of the internet frees people from a (perceived) obligation to act according to social norms.
The anonymity of the internet has huge repercussions on behavior.
For example, people who wouldn't usually steal (in person), sometimes rip stuff off online (music)

Facebook is a propaganda tool and marketing machine. Facebook is the ultimate troll in the world. People even get banned for expressing non popular opinions that don't match the memes and 'liberal' POV.
What a beautiful world where people are forced to share beliefs with a gun to the back of their heads.

Jokeshopbeard said: Having spread my wings and started to explore the dark corners of the Shroomery fully, I have come face to face on a few occassions, with the 'troll' mentality. Wiki defines it as:
"a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion,[3] often for their own amusement."

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why someone would get 'enjoyment' over psychologically harassing people via the internet, especially in a place like this.
Is this just the 'bully' mentality taken to the modern era? Is there something more to it? My guess would be that anyone who tries to upset others is simply upset themselves, but perhaps you guys could shed some further insight?
Wiki is not reliable on the most important and controversial things.
I would consider that definition a cover for the actual purpose of a troll.
The word was invented, I'm sure, within Rand think tank experiments conducted between military bases with the predecessor to the usenet, and private think tank units that were directed by psychologists and others who were monitoring the exchanges.
The idea was to create an entity that could say anything and always be explained away.
This entity was needed to foul or disrupt discourse that effectively opposed specific agendas. The idea was that the entity could color the perceptions of the reader so the reader would favor one position or another.
"Troll" had the appropriate connotations and created an entity that could conduct or support treason while simply appearing to be a social misfit angry at the world. This enabled them to return to continue the support for treason. It somewhat preserved their status in the minds of some viewers.
I've seen them used with far too much continuity to accept any lessor definition of them. However, there will always be an individual who thinks its cool and will emulate the behavior because they are not functionally capable of anything else.
-------------------- You always want what you need, but do not always need what you want. People that do not want what they need, have a problem. Can we stop doing all of the things we are doing that we do not want to do while still doing what we need to do?
