People who 'troll' on forums
    #23646533 - 09/15/16 04:04 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Having spread my wings and started to explore the dark corners of the Shroomery fully, I have come face to face on a few occassions, with the 'troll' mentality. Wiki defines it as:

"a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion,[3] often for their own amusement."

Source

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why someone would get 'enjoyment' over psychologically harassing people via the internet, especially in a place like this.

Is this just the 'bully' mentality taken to the modern era? Is there something more to it? My guess would be that anyone who tries to upset others is simply upset themselves, but perhaps you guys could shed some further insight?

It will only destroy what you are not.

Lot of different reasons for trolling.

Sometimes it's malicious and sheer bullying.

Other times it's a gentle teasing of someone who's way too far up their own arse.

There is a very dangerous sort of person who can't tell the difference.

We didn't call them trolls back in my day, we just called them assholes, and the worlds full of them.

I've 10 years of bartending experience, and seen a lot of fights start when someone made a joke that was taken as an insult when it didn't have to be.

I recently saw this documentary about people who had been targeted by trolls. It was shocking! These people will do anything to try and hurt people. One threatened this persons kids with rape, and posted horrfic picture he'd photoshopped the head of his victims over this porno scene fkin kids, and saying he was a pedophile.

This mum who had lost her little boyin one of the most terrible cases in UK where he was tortured to death by two young boys is also suffering trolling!! It beggars belief.

Anyhow two of them hired this hackers to find out where these people lived and tracked them down. One didn't have the guts to face his victim but they got him on the phone, and he just said he was having a bad day when he did it. Sounded very middle class

This other sht was shabby looking character in a shabby teashirt who when approached tried to hide his face and told THEM to stop harrassing HIM and then ran into his house

Why do these, and bullies in general do it? It is sadism. They feel power by thinking they control others by hurting them. Like you say deep down this is because they are not happy with their life and themselves, feeling powerless, and so this way they think they get control

How to deal with them? Well you can try and play with their shit, but best way is to not feed em. Ignoring them will kill them

This seems the most effective way to deal (and I say that from personal experience).

Still, I cannot understand why some people go to the lengths they do to 'troll'. Perhaps it's become a more popular sport because a smack in the mouth is an impossible outcome, as it would've been 30 years ago?

Maybe it's those 'making the joke' rather than the 'dangerous sort of person who can't tell the difference' who are to blame here though?

No-one deserves a punch in the head for making a joke. People have to be pathetically insecure losers to get wound up by other people's words.

If you can tell that someone is trolling its a bad troll. A good troll will never give any hint that hes trolling. Originally trolling was kind of like a harmless prank where you make someone upset. However nowadays its just about causing as much destruction as possible. Its yet another imageboard culture that was perverted when introduced to the wider public. This is similar to what happend to memes when 9fag started copying them.

Sorry man, but that statement sounds so contradictory. How is making someone upset ever 'harmless'?

So that would make 99.9% of the people on the planet 'pathetically insecure losers'? Sounds about right, I'm definitely in that 99.9% at times, when the words hit the right spot.

Probably 75% of people get wound up by words, 80% at the most.

I think negative attention is fulfilling for trolls.

Like how many people are hooked on drama, trolls love drama.

It helps them feels powerful.

(just like how kids often enjoy throwing rocks off a freeway overpass.)

It's just shit you don't grow out of. If you were one of those kids before (like I was) it just stays a part of you. The freedom addiction.

I'm with you Jokeshopbeard.

Words have the same power to divide and hurt us as they do unite and heal.

And online there's no wry smile to go with a joke that might otherwise be sore. There no open body language that contradicts the apparent meaning of a jibe poking fun.

In my opinion people who use thier words to divide and injure are uncomfortable connecting with people in more meaningful ways. Ultimately everyone wants importance and love, even the broken people who can't ask for it.

I have always thought theyre bored people who must have either nothing going on in their lives to keep occupied, or maybe some kind of psychological issue be it depression or something.

I see no joy to be gained from trolling lol. Some sad folks abt

Is bad now though as younger ones can be really upset by it. Internet bullying and such.
