I know there are 3 branches that can give credit reports: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Not sure why each one varies in the score department.

All three of them are independent and us different info. I had a free service that gives you all 3 scores with no strings attached. I don't think it was that company; I think it was CreditKarma. Always make sure there are no strings attached. I used to use companies that gave you all 3 scores, but you had to cancel within 10 days to avoid monthly memebership. Those are Ok if you remember to cancel.
Probably CreditKarma and Free credit report, and others are good, just read the fine print.

They're legit, but once you sign up for your "free" credit report, they will automatically enroll you in their "monthly monitoring service." So once you get the report, make sure you call and cancel the service. I canceled (literally) about 3 minutes after I got the report.

No, do not use freecreditreport.com. You can get the same service for free without being upsold and harassed by salespeople. https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ is the legitimate site for getting your free, complete credit report once a year from all three agencies (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion). This will show all your outstanding credit lines and any delinquencies, and it's good to check. If you just want to know your credit score, you can use https://www.creditkarma.com/ or https://www.creditsesame.com/ like other people mentioned. This can be important for loans and stuff, and it's fun to watch your score rise, but really it's just a reflection of the facts on your credit report. Mostly you want to make sure there are no open credit lines or delinquencies which you don't recognize. If you pay your debts on time, your credit score will increase just by keeping your credit lines open and in good standing.

Its unfortunate they can't give the annual credit report a special domain, especially with all the jerks trying to slip charges onto your credit card on the sly.
I'm glad ITT tech is gone, but itd be nice if the consumer protection agencies hassled freecreditreport.com and similar as well add hosted a .gov credit check site

I still haven't met anyone that was an ITT tech graduate that's doing well in life. I don't think they are a legitimate school but more like a front to milk free government money from students who are naive. Off topic.
