i gotta wonder if sound makes a difference in the shape of the crystals when they're cooling/growing. this calls for some experimentation.

Has anyone from the community here actually tried this? Any pics of results?

I was thinking of trying this and selling it on eBay but there are so many people on there selling bismuth already it'd be hard to make yours stand out.
Where else could you sell these?

The sale price of bismuth "crystals" has gone up.
If you can do it in a well ventilated area, and have sales ideas in mind, go for it. But don't expect to sell loads at art fairs or to rock shops unless you're making right good shit. The market for singular crystals is limited and most rock shops probably already have a supplier.
You also have to pay and pay alot to vend at large festivals and it is illegal to just stand in the parking lot with pockets full of rocks trying to sell them off. I dunno if you'd get arrested but they can throw you out and they probably will if someone complains about a weird hippie with alien rocks harassing them as they walk out from their car.
Online is your best bet but again you will be in the market with thousands of others so you really have to think about your selling point.
Unless you really do live in a pure hippie town full of hipsters that actually have money. You're good if that's the case.

Not this specifically. But I work with my sister in law who makes and sells gemstone jewelry. She doesn't buy bismuth anymore because the 'raw crystals' are so expensive now and, as jewelry, they take a very long time to sell. They're not worth the shelf space for the time being. Compared to her other works.
Bismuth generally doesn't make the most appealing jewelry though.

Some smart someone is selling "bismuth geods" on Amazon.
I suppose it's vaguely possible to have bismuth crystals grow on other rocks but rainbow color bismuth crystals growing inside another rock? I dunno but I'd think it'd be worth quite a bit more than $30 for a 2" geod half. But that's sorta what I'm talking about. The crystal itself isn't a great market but you can get creative with it and there is money to be made. What this person did was get or make an empty geod half and then glewed the rainbow colored bismuth inside.

are you sure they didn't use a geode as a "seed crystal"?

i also wonder how much (or how little) using a kiln (annealing oven) to slow down the cooling process. if a slow cool is what makes the neatest crystals, then maybe an 8 hour ramp down (cooling schedule) would make really intricate crystals.

As a rockhound myself, I actually thought that these were artificially dyed metals. I didn't know that they got their colors that way. That is really interesting!
I find them gawdy, but I do know people like them. I am definitely going to try making them because I would like to see what comes out of it and that I would have something I made myself, which just like digging for crystals, is a very rewarding experience.
I do need the money, so if they look good, I would try to sell them. Thanks so much for the information!!
I did just a LITTLE research since I um, am at work now, but didn't see information on how much of the metal to buy for a descent sized "yield" I don't want to buy it and then end up with this tiny little thing. It all just says "add some bismuth metal chunks to a pot"
