I think you're going to need a blue flame for this. Or perhaps smaler quantities at a time.

I'm no physicist, but couldn't you use an electric stove and a hand held propane torch to get the job done? Stove would keep the heat from being drawn away too easy/fast and the torch could boost it to the required heat. I imagine it'd be a bit of a pain in the ass to sit there heating up a pot or metal bowl with a torch though.
Short of that you could probably pick up an outdoor propane turkey fryer thing at a garage sale for pretty cheap.

I just came across this while trying to figure out if the giant pile of circuit boards I have has any real value and basically fits perfectly with this thread so I'm posting it.
Getting gold from circuit boards and it seems pretty easy to do: http://www.instructables.com/id/Gold-recovery/
Unless circuit boars with gold in them are rare, I've probably got a very good chunk of change sitting up in my attic right now.

I bet you could make molds and such to make them into animal shapes and shit. That'd be pretty cool.

I was considering doing this a few years back, may have to give it some more though. Certainly could at least invest in a kilo of bismuth to mess with.
Had a chunk me and some friends would melt with a propane torch then reform over and over again as it slowly burned away

I figure, as crystals go, that if you throw a small chunk of bismuth metal in the pot close to its melting point and keep stirring the pot, you get a crystal that is beautifully formed on all sides as it grows in all directions.
A seed crystal, as it were.

It's going to be almost impossible to clean it off the pot once it crystallizes. The melting point is over 200C which means even boiling water wouldn't melt it. Also it's a non-ionized metal so it's not going to become water soluble, and surfactants only work on non-polar substances anyway so soap won't help. You could probably dissolve bismuth with either H2SO4 or HNO3 but either of those acids will destroy your pots. The melting point is low for a metal so you could just use a shitty pot from the dollar store.

When I was melting bismuth with friends we literally just used a flat piece of metal and a torch

Nope if you just knock the pot with a hammer it comes out. Bismuth fills every crevice but it doesn't "stick". Likewise if you knock a cryastal mass you can knock loose individual crystals.

I stand by my statement, you would have to be nuts to eat out of the same pot you crystallized bismuth in. Even if bismuth is safe there are still potentially toxic impurities.

I doubt its any worse then the crap in my non stick pan I need to replace
I was worried more about fumes when I was melting it as I am sure it puts off some weird stuff when hit with a torch I did it outside though

I have a few pans I just need a nicer non stick wok pan as mine is made with questionable materials I believe.
I have a cast iron pan but everything always sticks to it...
