Habitat: Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc. Grass, some at the base of dead trees Gills: Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc. Brown, gills are white on younger shroomery, turn darker brown on the more mature ones Stem: Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc. Hollow, white tan Cap: Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc. See pics Spore print color: Very important! Working on one Bruising: Color that the mushroom bruises, if any. PICS HERE

Other information: Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

there should be no shortage of horse manure and/or manure with stable shavings or shredded straw, right?
iow, look in old manure piles and don't look in random patches of grass at the base of trees.

You can try to be stealth and risk law enforcement and angry farmers or be upfront but vague about your pursuits and maybe find a cool land owner here and there. You can't be arrested for asking to look for mushrooms.

Most farmers aren't just scanning there fields for people... many may not even bother you if they see you. I've only been politely kicked out of a couple places only in 15+ years and been in tons of yards, farms, condo gardens and other private property looking.

seems like MT attracts the full spectrum, IME. there are very conservative and very hippy/neo-hippy types. you just need to find someone chill who'll let you peruse their manure piles. or make one yourself via free manure offered on places like craigslist.
i guess it depends on what sort of area you're in and how willing you are to go to farms and ask to study the mushrooms that grow in their manure piles. you'll get shot down but you'll also eventually find someone who says sure and looks at you like you're nuts but doesn't give a flip whether you do or not. cubes don't grow up there so it's not like they're used to tons of people asking that type of question.
i'd rather be shot down when asking permission than shot at while trespassing.

while what you say about not constantly scanning fields is true, most farms in MT have dogs and/or caretakers that alert about any trespassing. livestock owners need them because of wolves and bears that can and will eat livestock. it's sort of a different world in some places up there...more like central canandian bush than the PNW or the NE US, etc.
