Hey guys, I've got a pressure cooker which reaches 80 K.P.A ( 11 P.S.I), fits 3 x 1 pint jars inside. How long should I p.c for if I'm using wild bird seed? i know 15 P.S.I for 60-90 minutes is recommended so how much longer should i extend the cooking time? or is 11 P.S.I not good enough for sterilization? Will appreciate any advice!

Honestly my best advice would be to get a PC that gets to 15psi. A Presto 01745 is good for a bunch of PF jars, but when you get to quarts and bags, you'll want even larger than that. I've asked a moderator to move this post to Mushroom Cultivation.
Any way you can return that one and get (at least) that Presto? I snagged mine for 60 bucks with an extra rocker.

I never used a pressure cooker or a glove box when I grew years ago. I made sure the room I was using was sparkling clean, took as shower, put on fresh clean clothes, gloves, mask, and goggles.
I steamed the jars in a pot with about an inch of water for 1.5 hrs. EVERYTHING was sterilized with isopropyl alcohol. Never had any contam issues associated with sterilizing the inside of the jars. Definitely NOT the best method but worked for me

I'm in South Africa so my p.c options are a bit limited. is there no way of making it work? I've read a few people recommend extending cooking time? thanks a lot for the reply

If it's gonna take a long time for your new PC to arrive, your old one will still hit 240 F. You can do the PF tek just fine with steam sterilization, which of course only hits 212 F. You could give the PF tek a shot to get your feet wet before jumping into grains. The yields might not be phenomenal but the experience prepping jars, inoculating, learning what healthy/unhealthy colonizing myc looks like, and fruiting would be invaluable experience. Just a thought if you've got time in your hands and some spores itchin to be germinated.
This is great advice. It's always good having a couple irons in the fire (multiple projects) to keep your mind off the lengthy time some things can take. Also, you can knock up more jars 2 weeks later, and have another PF going (and finishing) definitely by the time it gets there.
