Could the cow patties be too old to grow shrooms?

About 1 month ago, it rained a few days in a row and a friend and I went shroom hunting in a near by field. We harvested an entire small paper bag full and tripped all day.
It poured really hard for a few hours yesterday and soaked the ground. Plus, the ground was wet virtually all day today since it was cloudy all day. So this evening my friend and I went shrooming in the same field. This time we didn't find a single shroom, but we did see a few other wild mushrooms growing in a few of the patties.
He was thinking that it didn't rain enough for any shrooms to come up. But I am thinking perhaps the cow patties were too old. They are probably over a month old since the cows haven't been in that part of the field since before the last time we went shrooming, which was approximately 3 weeks to 1 month ago. And many of the patties started looking dry.
I am in north Florida and starting tomorrow it will rain every day for the next 2+ weeks. So hopefully it has nothing to do with the age of the cow patties, and everything to do with rain and the beloved Mother Nature.
I am hoping that the cow patties are still good, because we find a few white mushrooms growing in a few of them.
What do you guys think? How old is too old?

Just keep searching, I don't have a lot of experience picking from cow dung, but do have lots of experience picked from horse dung, and have found Pans which were growing from horse balls which were more than a month old, some were so old the grass had almost completely taken over them.
Some mushrooms take longer to fruit than others though, so just keep checking your area.

Not to rain on your parade, but:
5. Do not make threads or posts discussing or reporting the weather. This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. If it has rained within the last 1-10 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, and the time of year is correct then it is certain that that the mushroom you are looking for is growing.
For what it's worth, the age or dryness of a cow patty has nothing to do with it's likelihood to bear fruit. That is to say, while fresh steamy piles of shit will not bear fruit (immediately), some fruit are born from areas that appear to be nothing more than grass, although there was almost certainly a cow patty or other livestock manure there in the past that is the cause for fruiting. A good number of fruit harvested by this user has come from livestock manure that had already been dried by the sun and begun to degrade.

Hardly. However, the rules are there for a reason.

HoldTheDoor, rules can certianly hold a community together, and I respect this community's rules. But "disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. The obedient must be slaves." - Henry David Thoreau
Without getting off topic anymore, thank you all for the information. I did notice yesterday that some other wild mushrooms were growing in the patties, even though many of the patties were dry and already had grass growing over them.
This makes me feel better about returning to that field.

If you want a full time job pointing out the rules you should check out the 'OFFICIAL UK 2016 Liberty Cap Season' we spend most of the day talking about the weather. It's... why... it's almost racist to tell a Brit to stop going on about the bloody weather.
