Were you able to move? Otherwise it might be Sleep paralysis.

Sleep Paralysis or Hypnagogic hallucinations, I've been getting them since I was a kid.

Hypnopompic. Hypnogogic is the transition from awake to asleep. Just sayin.

I've never hallucinated people but I get some awesome patterns upon waking every so often.

Once when I was sick, not so long ago, I had this weird feeling/dream/sensation, that on TV was family guy for 16 minutes, then simpsons for 5 minutes, so I watched those episodes and then I woke up, I looked at the time and saw a little horse.

Yes you can hallucinate upon falling asleep, upon waking up, or in an in between state.

Sleep paralysis (the old hag, night mare, etc) can happen upon waking up or falling asleep. Hormones basically put your body on autopilot, paralyze your body to keep you from rolling off the bed or whatnot.
What happens if your brain wakes up before your body does.. you can't move, youre breathing but you cant control it. You feel an enormous weight on your chest (this is where all the stories of Succubus, witches, demons sitting on you etc come from).
Often times you hear screaming or scary sounds. Usually you panic.
The scariest part is most people dont feel alone in the room, something bad is there and just out of veiw (always behind and to the left of me).

With sleep paralysis, you often have vivid, fully open eyed hallucinations along with it. This is what most ghost or alien encounters (when in bed) come from.
