Shiitake log and spawn questions
#23642153 - 09/13/16 04:31 PM (7 years, 4 months ago) |

Hey there. I'm new to shiitake and log growing. I bought a bag of dowel spawn several months ago. I didn't have access to a good drill for the longest tiempo... But I finally got to use one. Not sure if my efforts will pay off though. I lugged home So many choice logs that sadly went too long uninnoculated and either got hit with bugs or foreign molds. At least 7 logs tho like I said I finally got a few going. The first two were quartered pieces and I sealed all the inside as well as the innoc holes well with wax. I know quartered cut logs aren't what's recommended, but do you think they'll work at all? Those are white oak that was cut around 2_3 months prior to innoc. The last log was live oak and its a real nice one. My concern is that at that point, the spawn has a very slight stinky musky smell, tho it looked fine and wasn't slimy or anything. This was several days ago. I have just a few dowels left and was hoping to utilize them for a small log I've collected. Is that smell a red flag for failure, do you think I'd be a waste of a good log? Its a live oak cut from the same branch as the one mentioned above. Also, I have them stored under a table in my garden. They are up off the ground and def out of direct sun. If they are gettin any its only stray and as far as I can see,its an all shady spot. Seems like a good spot but I'm new to all this. They aren't getting any rain fall on them. They're totally shielded from fallen rain. Is this going to be an issue? Should I move them up on some bricks where they can get more rain and maybe even some light? I have another spot that could work like that... But if light is a no no, could wrapping a tarp or something around it be a good move?
Thank you all for your time and hopefully replies Mush love

I have zero experience in log grows, and am only just now consolidating my first bag of Shiitake so I'm not much help.

It's all good bro. I appreciate the interest in the topic though. J found one answer regarding the tarp and the source says to avoid plastic as it can cause a sweating effect and promote other molds and issues... Recco a shade cloth or a cloth mesh type if material. You say your consolidating your first shiitake bag... Im sorry are yo referring to a spawn bag or a fruiting bag with the filter patch and whatnot? I foundna cool chart for wood types at fungi.com, the fungiperfecti store... I want to say that its Paul Stamens store. Anyway I'll see if I can dig it up

It's a sawdust bag- wedge>oats jar> pasteurized oak sawdust bag. It's been fully colonizes for about a week or two now, so it took over quickly, now just waiting for it to consolidate and brown.

Interesting. Although I have had differing results with Maitake and getting varied results with a couple different strains of Oyster.
And for fruiting I have a Greenhouse

I've never done shiitake on logs, and so I haven't used dowel spawn. But generally funky smelling spawn is not good. However, if you've never smelled shiitake spawn before you may not know what it's supposed to smell like. Shiitake grain spawn has a very pleasant smell I find, very mushroomy, slightly sweet.
I would just inoculate as planned and see what happens. Good luck with your grow!

I would wait to buy more dowels till when your ready to inoculate the logs. And yea follow the simple guidlines 0 to a few weeks from being cut, clean logs with good heartwood, seal with clay or wax.

Okay great! Thank you so much for the replies. I was feeling weird about using it. I remember whenever I smelled that kind of smell with cakes it always ended poorly. That weird pissy kind of musk. Right on, I'll throw out the spawn i have left and hopefully the logs i have will last for a short while. J said fuck it and bought some new ones. Should be coming in very soon. I have some goodies coming! I have some more shiitakes, some turkey tail and some maitake as well. The later is one I really love in botanical capsule blends. I can see why its called the dancing mushroom lol. I'm sure ill do a little dance once I see those fruits coming in never even tried the turkey tails but a new friend of mime who has exp with gourmet and medicinal foraging, spoke very highly of them... And of course the shiitake has earned its place as my fav edible mushroom for cooking and general wellness. So anyway... There's my life story lol. And hey man, that looks like a killer greenhouse! I'd love something like that one day

Y'all have any advice on whether I should continue to keep them out of the rain or. Not? Do they need moisture like that during colonization? They did get rained on pretty good before I inoculated them. Most pics Ive seen of log farms just have them sitting out in the woods either stacked or leaning upright. They were just innoc recently so it hasn't been too long in the dry covered spot... Can't imagine too much damage has been done

I love the way you think mate! And while I doubt getting rained on is bad- I bet over saturation could be- I really know nothing about outdoor log grows- but I'd bet having them under a tree during rain would be better- so they still get moisture but not too much. That's just my uneducated 2 cents though.

I have Stamets booklet on plug culture I could mail it to you. To much info to type out on here.
Yes you need to keep watered. He recommended at least weekly after inoculation. Rain is just as good as watering.
PM me if you want booklet.

That's actually a good guess man. Many of the log farm pics I've seen have been in the proximity of trees. Often theyre just leaned up against the trunks... So there's likely something to that. and thank you TA, I'm super stoked about getting all this going. For the longest time i hated mushrooms, except for psychedelics and even then the taste urked me... But since I changed my diet up and got older, I now see em as magic gems of medicine and nourishment... And the taste is something I enjoy and appreciate now. Also i've always enjoyed mycology... So its really cool to expand into different species and anticipate different types of yields. Yeah I'm pumped up no doubt
And thank you Quadman! That's good info there. I figured they'd need something while they're 'In the womb' and I do appreciate the offer but I will sadly have to decline. Really cool of you though
