Whole rye grains. Berries seems to be a US term. If asking in a health shop I would be asking "cI am looking for get whole rye grains, not steel cut or flakes, fully intact grains".
If you soaked and cooked rye flakes it would end up like porridge. Many are opposed to wheat these days so health shops are more likely to have alternative grains. Nothing wrong with wheat for growing on though.

Could rye flakes be used for PF TEK type set up/
Never come across them but imagine they would be super starchy and just like glue/porridge. Could work though, only done tubs for years tho so not up to date on any of that info anymore, whatever has changed since 2008ish I am oblivious to.

Surely BRF has a fairly porridge like texture?? Dunno been about 10 years since I did cakes, feel like a n00b again when trying to recall the beginners teks etc.

No man, it shouldn't be porridgey, it should be almost like...damp sand? The aim is to coat the wet verm in the flour, you don't want it to be sticky and sloppy it should be fluffy and airy if that makes sense.

Its needs to be damp enough for the brf to stick to it The porridge thing will be too wet and will be hard for the myc to grow through. It sort of grows round each tiny clump of of verm brf then spreads to the next a bit like grains, although it looks like a big solid blob when colonised, its actually quite airy and can breath. Its like a little network, if it was a solid blob of porridge it couldn't pass through

Yeah I get the mechanics totally, just cannot recall what BRF cakes looked/felt like at all, been so long.
Sorry for taking thread off topic, back to supplies ladies and gents.

Yeah it is the consistency of the BRF on it's own I can't quite recall after adding moisture/field capacity..
Lol, seems like ya guys think I don't know what PF Tek is...
My own fault for sounding retarded, moved onto Martha's, monos, SGFC's very quickly after 2-3 BRF grows under my belt.. It amazes me the shit I just don't recall at all that I spent years/months doing, like vape units I find under the bed, must have used them for 18+ months and don't recall ever seeing them..
Weird cos I have a great memory for most things, I guess there is only so much space in my decrepit mind for random info..
What bulk subs are y'all using??
Anyone got a good h-poo source in UK? May go around the fields and just collect, but if there is a decent source for pre-dried and ammonia free stuff then I am looking to move away from coir at the moment, just keeps getting trich, never had a problem in YEARS and last 3-4 mono groups have just gone to shit 3-4 days after fruiting begins..
Unless I have 7-8 different dirty MS syringes, I cannot work out the root cause at all. Back to SGFC and trays of straight rye atm just to get something, they are fine, so again convinced it is something to do with coir/past etc.
I think it could just be the weather over the last year, super damp and just mold everywhere, can't see why the exact same tek I have used with no contams ever have suddenly failed time after time..
So yeah, bulk sub preferences anyone? Good straw/manure etc etc?? Any input welcome.

Decent deal on coir bricks at 'Pets At Home' stores atm. Buy one get one half price, so 1.5kg works out at £4.50, pretty good if ya need something same day. Asked as many staff members and googled the brands they had and all seem untreated etc, in the reptile bedding section.

Poundland coir bricks are about 500g for £1, they might be out of stock or gone soon as the season is over for them.
They also ad these coir liners http://www.poundland.co.uk/gardening-2016/pots-planters/charlie-dimmock-coco-liners-40cm-2-pack
They are more expensive than coir bricks but I wondered if they could be used as a casing layer, or on top of a casing layer, and I expect it might hold its structure and make harvesting easier.

lol, the Pet Home store was literally next to a Poundland I went into in the same trip.. Pet Home stuff is organic, although I guess most is, will check PL stock next time I am there and give it a test run, thought about looking as they sell so much random stuff, but decided there was no way they would have it, prob varies store to store as well, place is hardly reliable for any product week in, week out.

I just got spores from salviaonline.co.uk they came quick.
I had trouble finding affordable synthetic filter material to allow contamination free airflow for growing stones.
Muddled through with a chopped up foam mat but I suspect I will run into problems. Going to try some pillow stuffing. Any tips re filter disks cheaper than the £25 on amazon would be sweet.
