Monotub size, spawn & substrate ratio

Hello everyone,
I have a few questions you probably hear all day, but I cannot find a good answer yet:
- In a few weeks I will have 3qt of spawn and looking for a good substrate ratio for a monotub. I saw 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 and so on. For me, time and a certain tolerance against contamination is an important factor. So personally I would chose 1:2, since I think it will colonizing faster than 1:4 and therefore time for contamination is reduced. What do you recommend by experience?
- When I have my spawn + substrate ratio. Let's say 3qt spawn + 6qt substrate (1:2 ratio) = 9qt. What monotub size would be best AND Would it be a good idea to split up 9qt of spawn-substrate mix on two monotub?
Hope you can help me, cause I got headache already.

No one 66liter mono is fine. Spawn cleanliness is most inportant for a monotub.

66liter for which substrate ratio? Remember I only have 3 qt of spawn, 66liter seems way to much.

Your gonna want a substrate depth of 3-4", take your width and length of your tote and you can find out exactly how much sub you need..

This thread was never about the amount of substrate. It is only about the perfect ratio relative to my 3qt of spawn and the size of the tub.

you seem to know what the differences might be between ratios, and an idea of what you want to achieve, so go with your gut on it

27 qt too small IME for 9 qts. 55qt needs about 14. I'm sure there is a tub size that would be perfect, but I just don't know what one.
whenever i do 27 qt totes, i use about 4-5 qts total, so u could split that into two 27 qt totes if u can't find perfect size.

Oh, thanks man - this helped me a lot! Do you think I am good to go with 1:2 or are there benefits using 1:3 including the risks of longer colonization?

hehehe….dude, i think u should go with your gut….as you grow more, you will find what works for you, and in so doing, figure out how each choice you make can have both negative and positive consequences.
but in short, more spawn per project results in the faster colonization of a fewer amount of projects. that same amount of spawn split up can result in slower colonization but with a larger amount of projects. between those two extremes, you'll find a sweet spot.

I just spawned a mini monotub 4qts sub to 3qts spawn.....my last mini is still colonizing because my ratios were off....so I’m waiting on it....I’m hoping I can get them to fruit around the same time

pasty i think does 2:3 on a 27qt tote, he uses them a lot and has a thread about them.
liloldme uses tubs smaller than 66qt and has great results too (dunno if its 27qt or not), not sure if he has write up but his tubs look great in the POTD thread
those guys would be ur best bet for search

Thanks BL,I don’t know why I didn't search a little more....just trying g to get my feet wet....I should've just waited a few more days for the other 2 QTS of spawn to finish colonizing and tried a 66qt mono

You put 7 quarts of sub into a mini mono? How many quarts is your tub? How much room is left for above substrate for growth?

My sub is 3in deep and there is still a foot for them to grow....my tubs are 16in tall x 16in long x 12in wide....I measured how much sub I would need by using water til I got to 3inches deep

That doesn't make sense because you said its 16*16*12, which is 3072 cu inch or about 53.2 qt.
