Anyone ever seriously injured their shoulder?
    #23639983 - 09/12/16 09:35 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

How long did it take to heal?

I had a minor crash on the bike this weekend; terrible road conditions and a lapse in concentration and lost the back wheel and spilled it onto a grass verge. The bike & I are mostly OK and walked away, scratched and scraped, but my shoulder is giving me a lot of grief.

A friend suggested it might be my rotator cuff, meaning a possible 1-3 month healing time. Which is a fuck, cause I was just getting back into the gym regularly and I want it to heal as quick as possible.

A couple of people have suggested I get it looked at professionally, but I'm not sure if it's gonna help enough for me to endure my hatred of medical establishments, and I've had enough muscular injuries over the years to know they always heal in the long run, and I doubt some quack is gonna be able to speed that up.

Anyone have any opinions/advice they can share please?

Did it feel like it dislocated or popped in and out?

No, pretty sure it didn't dislocate at any point. I can move it in all directions, but there's just a few positions which are agonising, above the constant dull ache in the area.

I've seriously injured my shoulder. If you feel like you need to see a doctor see a orthopedic one. They are different then normal general practitioners and will be able to determine if you tore something.

Just be really careful with it and don't rush anything whatsoever. If your pain level gets unmanageable then I would get it checked out.

Should be right to wait it out. You really only do damage that requires surgery when it pops in or out which can stretch or break ligaments and or tear the cuff.

Thanks guys, appreciate the advice.

How would one know if anything had been 'torn'?

Ah thanks again man. Pretty damn sure it's the rotator cuff after seeing that diagram, and also pretty sure it ain't torn.

Ah well, just have to ride out the healing time!!!

Sure.  Consider driving a car instead of a bike before you fuck yourself up a lot.

Maybe take some mild anti-inflammatory medicine for a week if you can stomach it.  That should help with the pain, allow for healing, and not leave you too medicated to ride.

I crashed my motorcycle and hit my shoulder pretty bad once.

I went to the doctor and got an X-ray.  Radiologist said everything looked ok but that there could have been a slight separation between 2 bones.  Doctors had me lift my arms different ways, and decided that it would probably heal itself in 2-6 weeks.  It hurt a lot to raise my arm over my head.  But it slowly healed and then it was good as new.

NEVER! I'm of the opinion that if I kill myself on a bike one day, I'll die happy, knowing that I left this life in the way I most wanted to.

I used to be into cars, but cops pull you over everywhere when you have a nice one, and who needs that?

Thanks for the advice though man, already on it!!

Thanks man, gives me hope. It's been 4 days since and she already feels a bit better. Taking Naproxen & Ibuprofen & sleeping a lot, so giving it the best chance of healing quick. Wanna get back down the gym asap goddammit!

I tweaked mine doing a lift and twist action at work. Ignored it and got on with my day. Ignored it for weeks. Mad a habit of holding it differently than the other. Made a chronic postural problem to compensate for the pain and weakness. The postural problem became the problem. Nerve issues. Lack of movement and strength.

That was 5 years ago. About 18 months ago I started massage and corrective physio. It's better and I can almost hand stand again.

It's worth keeping it moving gently, massage, yoga, physio at the time I think. That's what I would do next time. Not in a rush for surgery though.I know they love to operate on rotator cuffs but na. .

I would suggest waiting it out op....if your range of motion doesn't improve within a week or two, then...see an orthopedic who will no doubt order a x-ray or an MRI....no one here can tell you what is wrong with the mechanics of your shoulder without them.

slight tears can heal themselves. I have had excruciating pain in my shoulders after a fall for a few days ...then to wake up completely pain free after a few days. Time will let you know.

Yeah thanks Thay, that's what I'm going with. I still have full range of motion, it's just fucking excruciating at points and a constant dull ache the rest of the time. I figure it'll be much better within a month, and the anti-inflammatories are really making a difference.

I hate injuries that keep me away from lifting!

Popped my shoulder out of socket once and immediately popped it back in, which sucked.  It hurt for a couple of months whenever I did the same motion that led to it popping out the first time.  Now I don't even remember which shoulder it was.

Fuck, between my shoulder and the heat here (sleeping in the day) I haven't slept properly for days. Beginning to take its toll now...

I keep thinking it's starting to feel better and then I wake and it's all fucked up again.

The only reason I'd go to a doc is to rule OUT a serious rotator cuff injury and also to rule out other shit via x-rays, like fractures or whatever.  The doc ain't gonna do much with soft tissue damage except give you some minor pain medication and maybe muscle relaxers.  Just go easy, try not to push the motion too.

If it doesn't start improving after a week I'd go to a doctor and have them get it x-rayed.
