Coir Boogers
    #23639574 - 09/12/16 07:30 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I broke down several pounds of coir today using an oyster shucker, and gloves, but didn't wear a dust mask. They don't sell blocks where I live, so I had to buy a single big one.

Just as a warning to people out there with allergies or sensitivity to dust.

It gets messy.
I recommend a dust mask if you're working with a lot of it.

I can't do it outdoors since I live in the city.

Just throwing the word out there to people who want to work with coir.

What?  You didn't wear a dust mask?  You're going to get coir lung!

Please..... Paappa...

I think... I got. The Coir lung....

Hey, I have masks.

I didn't think I was going to get that down and dirty.

When you blow your nose an hour later, and it's black and brown, and a pina colata comes out.

One might reconsider.

Pro'ly a dumb question because I haven't worked with the stuff: but why not soak it before breaking?

If you buy a large amount at a time it comes in really big bricks. Usually you don't use it all at once so you break it up. The best way I found is to drive a screwdriver into it to flake it apart.

It's my first time pasteurizing... a lot. (for me)

It's still at 140 degrees.

I'm hoping I added enough Verm.

Waiting for it to cool down so I can mix it.

use a hack saw. or an old kitchen knife to cut a block of coir...

leave the ice pick with sharon stone.

ANYWAY to OP. atleast you have a bunch of good boogers to pick out.
ever smoked any large cuts of meat and stood around the smoker?
my boogers turn BLACK and smell rather beefy:cheers:

I have some Jesus nails in my tool drawer. (Those fuckers are literally 5-7 inches long and about as big around as a pen tube)

I set one at the middle, third, whatever depth of the brick I need, tap with a hammer, and it comes apart so easily.

Could see a screwdriver doing the same principle.

I use the 5kg bricks too, and I have never had any problem with dust when breaking them apart. It is a bit messy, but that is to be expected. I find that a screwdriver works well and the claw end of a hammer works OK too. I weigh them out and store them in zip lock gallon bags. I've been weighing out 650 gram per bag since that is how much the small bricks are supposed to weigh, but I've found that it usually leaves a bit extra. Perhaps 600 or 625 would be better.

Where do you get large bricks from? My petco sells single 650 gram bricks, or 3 packs of 650 grams...but its a bit expensive. Would be bad ass to find a huge ass brink that I could break off chunks when needed. (ecoearth brand)

They also sell bags of it in non-brick form. It doesn't even equal the amount of the 650 gram bricks, but is  somehow twice as expensive.

You can get big ones online. Some hydroponic shops sell the big one too. I've never bought anything other than eco earth 650 bricks though. Seen others post about the hydro shops.
