I got a digital pressure cooker!

I haven't got far with mushroom growing, but this is what I sterilize with.  It does 4 small jars, or it could do bags but I have only tried it with jars.

Did one jar with bird seed and the jar sat on my desk for like 2 months with seed in it.  It got yucky but it really wasn't molded up at all, just sort of brownish, not even sure it was contaminated.... didn't want to find out though so I pitched the jar

But since I haven't been trying to cultivate, I found out this thing makes great meals.  Does a pot roast in under 1 hour.

I also canned pickles with it, and my mom did jams, tomatoes, and peaches.  It's so nice because it has safety features and a timer, and you can touch the outside without it being hot.  You can set it up to can some jars, and you can leave the house, and come back with it done.

You can also just use it as an electric pot cooker if you ever run out of gas.

My point is I think it is good for a hobbiest who is starting out.  Reason being is even if you end up not going pro, it's useful for other things.  Also just seems safer if you're not used to doing a pressure cooker on the stove.

2016 was a good year, +5 lb of Morels, and I ate 8 new species of wild mushrooms:  Herecium, Chanterelles, Black Trumpets, Parasol Mushroom, Fairy Ring Mushroom (marasmius oreades), Wild Oyster, Slippery Jacks, Honey Mushrooms (found over 100lb, froze 4lb in my freezer.)

Hey Razare,

Welcome to the hobby!  Hope you enjoy your stay.

I have one of those and it will work well for you.  The digital aspect is very convenience and because it's automated, there's little baby sitting needed.  I've had very good results from the few grows that I've done.

Having said that though, I've found a few drawbacks with mine.

  • Max PSI - Most electric pressure cookers will only get to 12 PSI, which is not a dealbreaker but will extend your cook times for thorough sterilization.  As a rule, I just cook everything for 2 hours at a pop (my cookers max setting) but that slows everything down.  I might be able to get by with less ... haven't experimented with this much honestly.
  • Small capacity - Mine won't fit anything taller than 6" ... which means I can't cook large jars and have had to get creative about things like agar containers.
  • Small capacity - I can't cook more than one large container at a time.  This means when I'm trying to get up for even a medium sized grow, just prepping the grains will take me days.  Cook 1 jar (2 hours), let cool (several hours), repeat multiple times over several days.  The time really adds up.

Having said that, what you have will definitely work as a starter kit ... I just think you'll out grow it quickly.  If I were you, I'd start monitoring craigslist for used pressure canners.

Btw, if you haven't made one already you should consider making a still air box.  They are highly effective and about the most economical tool around.  Very good at maintaining the chain of sterility.

Good luck and good growing!
