Misophonia
    #23639172 - 09/12/16 05:25 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

My fucking god... I just found out there's a damn word for this... it's strong in this cat, the struggle is beyond real... it's pure fucking hell at times.

when people make chewing noises where they smack their lips and shit I have the crazy urge to rip their fucking jaw off... add the sound when they reach into a plastic bag to grab the food to make said chewing noises and the rage/disgust effect triples...

then there's snoring... my girlfriend snores, and she can't figure out why I sleep on the couch so often, even though I've told her... not only is it loud and keeps me awake all night, but it triggers a true to god fucking rage/disgust feeling... not at her really, just at the god awful sound.

heavy mouth breathing is just as bad.

other various noises like top 40 radio stations will also trigger it... as is my girlfriends son who is sitting beside me playing the same vine over and over and over and over again, while eating a bag of cheesies while smacking his lips, crinkling the bag noises and making other weird mouth/nose sounds, while the dog is crunching and slurping it's own food/water at the same time

:megacrankey:

it's too much, it drives me fucking insane... I googled "mouth sounds drive me fucking insane"... and sure as shit, it's a symptom of "Misophonia"... my new word for the day.

I actually lose a lot of sleep over this, because of snoring and breathing sounds, which I can hear even if I'm in a different room, no matter how faint it might be, it's like they're doing it right in my fucking ear...

anybody else like this?... fuck me, it's maddening!!... I am surprised I haven't put my fucking head through the drywall at the moment, godamn!

if there is a hell, it would be full of people snoring, making chewing and slurping noises, crinkling plastic bags, mouth breathing and playing the same part of a really shitty pop song over and over and over again, with a top 40 music station playing in the background... fuck

I hate this

Edit: but really though sorry to hear that. When i was a little kid i remember certain sounds literally made my teeth hurt, well not hurt but a very unexplainable unpleasant experience. I hope you find a cure.

Certain sounds can be annoying, its far from a daily occurrence for me though.
The biggest culprit is people who eat with their mouths open

Top40 radio is just generally annoying, I don't think any phobia is necessary for that

Speakin of your girlfriend, so do you get triggered even if she's blowin you? Or do you just avoid that altogether?

Also, to me, the sound of a baby crying is the most obnoxious fucking sound on Earth. That's by far the most "triggering" sound I can think of.

Yeah, I had dinner with a very famous and well respected Classical musician (he cooked this dinner), my roommate was there and was eating like a fucking pig.
Very embarrassing on top of being gross.

Yea I am the same. ive figured it's just me, something I caused through my own selfish actions, I am filled with anger, it is something I am working on.

Also, Did u by any chance recently stop taking any drugs?.. I know from own experiences I usually get like that a lot after binging on alcohol or marijuana and then stoping cold turkey.

it's not a 'phobia' really... it's an entirely different beast lol

if it was a phobia it would trigger a fear type reaction... this causes a rage/disgust/extreme frustration all mixed together type feeling... beyond simple annoyance as well.. I have to physically remove myself from the situation at times, often seeming rude at I'm sure, although I really try to NOT be rude about it... it's not usually them, it's just the way my brain is wired apparently.. although some people really do need to learn how to chew with their fucking mouth closed

children crying/whining in general is ear-splitting.  babies are the worst, though.

i'm also curious about the oral sex sounds question directed to the OP

OP:  my first girlfriend has this same "condition"

I know right?

I actually had to say something to my ex roomate about it... he was the noisiest eater you'd ever meet... it was disgusting.. one day, before I actually almost did rip the jaw off his face and cut his tongue off, I had to say it "DUDE... why you gotta eat so FUCKING loud!??"... "because when you slurp it around your tongue and breath while you're chewing it tastes better"... I can't believe I didn't break his fucking jaw right at that moment... but then he woulda been making 'slurping' noises and shit out of a fucking straw

My father has a severe case of this. He can't stand tapping fingers, clicking pens, snapping fingers, clapping, feet rubbing on carpet, chewing, whistling, and many other noises. I always thought it was due to his years of methamphetamine abuse, until I developed similar, less severe symptoms around age 17. I can't say whether I developed it genetically or just from influence being raised by him.

It can be very stressful, and most people will assume that you're just being petty or dramatic when you ask them to stop or remove yourself. Some will even continue to do it on purpose, thinking it's a joking matter. These people don't understand how much danger they are potentially putting themselves in...

Yeah, rain falling on dried leaves is among my favorite sounds. That, and shattering glass are really quite peaceful.

apparently it is actually hereditary...

and you're right... the feeling I get when I hear these sounds is not a joke... I literally feel like I could do something extreme at times if I don't remove myself from the situation... I mean I can joke about it while it's not happening, but holy shit... during, people have actually noticed my eyelid start twitching and teeth clench... one of my friends even actually saw my pupils constrict.

and ya... the people who start doing it on purpose really are taunting a fucking rattle snake... it can get that bad for me.

I can handle that, (rain and shit) in fact it helps drown out all the other sounds that can trigger it really... I like consistent white noise... a single drip one at a time could definitely set it off though...

and ya, utensils scraping on plates/teeth is like nails on a chalkboard lol

Misophonia is one ugly mofo!

I discovered i had it about a year ago, even found a forum dedicated to it, Misophonia.org I joined and they quickly emailed me to be a Admin  that was pretty funny.

For me, the worst is kid voices, repetitive kid talk (maddening), mentally handicap people who repeat themselves with nonsense, and squeeky sounds like those produce plastic bags for fruit/veggies at the gorcery store and rubbing rubber ballons with your hand. Also, rubbing styrofoam together (yuck). Scraping sounds arent too bad luckily (aka chalkboards).

Also, any sirens, people arguing/yelling/stressed out voices and people eating/chewing/burping/gleeking/drinking/gulping/breathing hard/wheezing/coughing are all gross to hear. Farting is perfectly OK thou :awebig:

I use my ear plugs (the safety kind) and often cover my ear with my pointer in a sly way like im leaning on my hand listening, to avoid most these sounds.

Also, wearing safety headsets is the best, and i use them anytime i use something loud and annoying like a vacuum cleaner, chainsaw or miter saw.

I got real bad misophonia while on 2 hits of acid, and my fountain pond (which is usually awesome to hear) got really maddening annoying and the sound of water repeatingly falling on itself was tettering on causing insanity and tranquility at the same time.

Its a shitty mental condition to have, but on the bright side, its better than Down Syndrome

Strangely enough, im also hypersensentive to light, especially at night. Not sure what that condition is called, havent looked it up yet :nonono:

I also find that sound goes thru me, rubbing a plastic shoe on a fucking chair so it squeaks, repeatedly
Like when chalk squeaks on the blackboard eughhhh feel it in my teeth hahahahaha.

One of the worse i knew a man once, poor chap was disabled so totally not his fault, but oh my he would make this sloppy wet sound with his mouth and lips none stop, i couldnt bear it :frown: open close mouth lick open close lick eughhhhhhh

And other, when certain fabrics make a strange squeak type noise, like a high pitch something fk i dunno how to describe it but again, makes me cringe hahaha

I live alone and its probably for the best hahahaha

I always laugh at farts though.
Its a shitty mental condition to have, but on the bright side, its better than Down Syndrome

Strangely enough, im also hypersensentive to light, especially at night. Not sure what that condition is called, havent looked it up yet :nonono:

dude... yes... you get it.

with the light too... if I don't have earplugs and a blindfold, I probably wont sleep... unless benzos are involved.

even the light from my alarm clock can keep me awake

then there's the exploding head syndrome and sleep paralysis that top it all off when I try to sleep...

I once threw a sledge hammer at the radio at work and busted it into pieces because of 'gang nam style'... people weren't sure whether to laugh or back away slowly and say nothing at all...

I always laugh at farts.

I imagine most people in that position would predominately be concerned about the potential liability, of someone reacting so strongly to something so insignificant.

So is Misophonia like the Opposite of ASMR? Instead of trigger sounds that are Euphoric and Peaceful, you get trigger sounds that are Dysphoric and Agitating?

We had this little fake birdhouse that was supposed to make a dog whistle (high frequency inaudible to humans) whenever the dogs barked to discourage barking.

Well the reality was any loud sudden sound would set the fucking thing off. I had a little shithead jack russell (rip, i loved that dog to death[literally when he died it was because we accidentally let him play in the sprinkler to long on 4th of july:sad: at least he died doing what he loved], but fuck he was a little bastard ) and instead of not barking he just barked right at the fucking thing until the battery died.

Anyway, I could hear this thing. Idk if i could hear a legit dog whistle, but this thing would literally scratch the inside of my head every fucking time it went off. Nobody believed me i could hear it was going off either. And i could hear it all the way in my basement with surround sound blasting movies a  80 meters away in the basement with it outside.

I ended up trashing the fucking thing as soon as they  turnes around and left the house.

techically I guess lol... our brains are wired differently than the majority, but it's more common then they once thought, people just don't report it much... so it's prolly even MORE common than people realize... it's also a spectrum disorder, so a minor annoyance for some people can be a major thing for others... I seem to be on the latter side... at least with some things... chewing sounds and snoring/heavy breathing at night are my biggest triggers... and it really, really does affect my life... I handle it pretty well for the most part though, but shit, I have my moments for sure...

and again, I don't shift the blame on others making the sounds, it's me... not them who have the problem... so I basically keep it under wraps unless it gets real bad, then I remove myself from the situation as politely and nonshalantly as I can so they aren't blaming themselves or offended... it really is my own problem, not theirs, so I do whatever I can in my power to make it a non-issue.... doesn't always work though :P

no cure as far as I know at this point either which kinda sucks, but whatever.. could be worse I guess

The best treatment is progression therapy, ie slowly listen to these sounds at low volumes then increase volume over time. Might help.

I have a friend with diagnosed autism. They have trouble with sensory over load. She get very stressed with noises, chewing, whistling, tapping, foot squeeking  . ....

She makes me smile somtimes when she tells me she had an outburst and told somone to "stop fucking whistling" in the supermarket.

On a more constructive note..

Autistic people find ways to cope. For example good headphones. My friend is looking at some groovy pink ear defenders.

But doesn't your heartbeat and the sound of your own breathing drive you nuts if you use earplugs, or are noises made by yourself more tolerable?
