Sab or no sab...

So I went shopping today and got everything i needed for my first grow. I only bought one clear tote tho. My question is should I use it for a sab or a sgfc? I have been doing some research and some people say sabs aren't needed. I just want to know what people have experinced during grows with out using a sab. I'm going to be doing brf cakes, and fruiting them in a sgfc.

I'll go buy another clear tote for a fc when my substrate gets to 100% colonized.

It's definitely advisable, but if you can do your stuff quickly in a clean area with as little moving air as possible, success is possible. Spray disinfectant in the air, then be sure to flame sterilize needles before each inoculation, while also wiping injection ports with isopropyl immediately beforehand. It has worked for me. -Tim

You'll have as much as a month to wait, so may as well make the SAB.

... No. Doesn't matter if it "worked" for you. The chances of success are low as hell. This person is looking to succeed at something. Presumably with a failure rate lower than 60%. When someone is looking to succeed, you don't tell them to go ahead and do the bare minimum. You'll quickly learn that things like that don't fly here. Bad ideas get shot down in favor of better ones. If there are already good suggestions in a thread, the suggestion to do worse than that is less than desired.

I totally get what you're saying, but I really wouldn't take what I said as "advice". It was more like a theoretical possibility thing with a disclaimer.

Use your current box to make a SAB and then once the cakes are almost done, get a new box for a SGFC

Thanks for all your input, I will use current tote for a sab, and buy a new tote for a fc. Will the sab in rr's videos on mushroomvideos.com be sufficient enough? I have looked at a few on here and they seem to be way more sophisticated than the one in rr's video, all he has is a tote with two arm holes.

All you need is a tote with two armholes. Paying attention to the details of clean procedure will get you a lot farther than a "fancy" sab. Don't wave your hands over open containers in the sab. Don't flame in the sab. In fact, here -

Yeah that's why I put it in quotes lol. I thought about prefacing fancy with "for lack of a better word."
I remember seeing a picture of yours before and it really cracked me up! Those holes are fuckin priceless. I assume your doing your transfers with that steak knife too

Is that the same knife you used to hack the holes? You're right, it ain't purty, looks like it works though.

I'm pretty sure he melted the holes, but with a knife or something. I tried to hack holes in my first sab. Nope.

If the tote is larger than 100qt then use it as a SAB. If not, use it for the sgfc and then buy a tote that is >100qt and then make a SAB out of it.
