Auroville has a Government which is controlled by the Indian government and the Aurovillians. There can definitely be a balance and we need to find it.
You can read though the economic history of Auroville which is pretty interesting, they slowly implemented a lot of cool programs to help everyone.
Stuff like sharing food and funds where it is needed most. One of the coolest things I read about is a "free store" where everything is free. They even do tailoring!
-------------------- Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

There's a balance somewhere to be sure, we're far from it at the moment
Seattle and Portland are good examples of general progress from what I've seen, where people tend to be involved in local politics and there are a lot of effective grassroots movements.

I didn't read most of this thread, but my girlfriend lived here for 9 months, and then stayed a shorter stint another time. She taught school there, volunteered/helped around, and loved it. Apparently they have lots of cool/interesting/fun things going on with a wide range of people but like everywhere, there's shitty people everywhere. However, Auroville seems like it has less shitty people that most places.
I can try answering a few questions about the place if anyone's interested, from my secondhand knowledge.

But for a professed utopia, Auroville has a laundry list of problems; high up on the list are robbery and sexual harassment cases in the non-gated community surrounded by local villages, but there have been more drastic cases of rape, suicide, and even murder.

That happens everywhere though... I saw multiple farms listed on their site run by single mothers and their kids so I doubt its that sketchy

What was the living situation like? It says on their site housing is short so people should plan on bringing or finding temporary shelter if they can't afford building a home. I think it said the city helps fund construction though and they have a department with architects to plan out and build new homes.

So you are cool going to India and being raped and robbed by hippies as opposed to staying where you are or going anywhere else. Nice logic. Have fun with that. Hippies, LOL.

I don't know anything about this place but I'd rather go to Christiania in Denmark because India seems like a shithole.

I know she house-sitted for a while, but she may have lived outside of the town another time. It a hostel. I'm not too sure.
It's a money-free place and as long as you help out around the community, you can stay. But it's also kinda weird because there are people who have side jobs and have an extra income, so they live in auroville for nothing and regularly take expensive vacations.
Also, I think there's a bit of tension between the folks at auroville and the more traditional south Indians who live outside of the town but I dont know all the details behind that.
