What kind of quinoa is best for Alien Substrate Formula (e.g., white, red, black)? Does it matter?
Is it best to use whole seeds, rather than puffed or flakes?

Whats the advantage in using quinoa for making spawn? Its the most expensive grain out there...I've seen it sell for like $10-$17 a pound. I pay $0.22 for whole oats, could probably find them cheaper if I shopped around.

I've seen it work really well. And you can get it for about $3 a pound. And that's dirt cheap for something that works well.

The only advantage I can see to using quinoa is the small kernel size and thus more inoculation points, but you could get that from WBS or millett for a fraction of the price.
Besides that quinoa is very soft and can turn mushy quick when I cook it at home....id hate to see what myc would do on that stuff. If it worked well we'd see more people doing it....or growing on something similar/cheaper like rice....
Not trying to sound like a troll OP, i just think you'd be better off with something else. I'd hate to see you start off on the wrong foot.

But still essentially no money at all.

Hard to imagine ever needing 50 pounds.

Maybe you're right, but I suppose one could always simultaneously try two approaches, brown rice flour and vermiculite on the one hand, and Alien Substrate Formula on the other, and then compare results.

So any answers to my original questions?

First of all alien substrate sounds like some 15 year old garbage that only noobs resurrect as a good idea. And there's no grain in substrate...
Second off quinoa has been used before, if you can't get it to work its therefore operator error.
Third, use grains that are cheap and easy for you

It's something I came up with and it worked well, especially as a spawn. I use it off and on to this day. Back in the day there were many of us trying all kinds of crazy experiments and this was one of them.
