Mushroom I.D Mature/late season P.subs Melbourne?
    #23636827 - 09/11/16 07:08 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:

Domestic yard in woodchips under a woody shrug or two. I'm new to mushroom identification. Went for a few bushwalks earlier in winter and picked some shrooms I thought may be subs, but ended up putting them in the compost. Spread the compost near woodchips for a herb garden near the photographed site. I didn't notice these growing until the growth stage photographed.

Although it is late in the season (early Sept when photographed) it has rained a lot lately, and I'm wondering if these are mature P. subs?

In the photo below there are ones that look like mature copper or caramel topped mushrooms. There are others that actually look blue but I think they are the same species (just old and waterlogged?) as they have hints of the caramel colour in mid-cap.

After another dry day and wet day the blue ones have all rotted, (see photo below) confirming my suspicion they are old shrooms (wish I'd seen them earlier, would have made identification easier).

Where? North-East Melbourne

Gills:
Color- Depending on the condition of the mushroom they were either mid to dark brown. In the waterlogged blue ones in the first photo above they were black.

Stem:
The stems were white, thin-ish, hollow, varied length, but say, 5-8cm

Cap:
Convex to conical shape. I'm wondering if the conical shape is due to their maturity.

The color is caramel on top but more pale than a lot of the photos of P.subs I've searched, but I'm wondering, again, if this is due to their age? They are striated around the rim, rather than smooth or polished.

Spore print color:

Seems the same as the gills, dark brown. The mushroom was a little wet when I took the print and hasn't fully dried in the photo sorry.

Bruising:
The stem stays silvery-white, seems a little dry. On the pale caramel mushrooms there is brownish-bluish bruising but certainly not vibrant blue or purple.

When I squeezed the blue shrooms they exuded a black squid like ink and two days later after a dry day and went night they are all rotten in the garden. Do subs turn blue like this after heavy rain and at the end of the season or their life cycle?

Any help appreciated. If unsure I'll see what pops up next Autumn and do I.D on young shrooms.

Coprinellus micaceus or similar, IMO. Certainly not a psilocybe.
Take care.

OK, just googled that image, seems correct. Wish I'd seen that first, cheers

Your in a good place to learn. Lots of threads and photos from Australia you could go over. Familiarize yourself with what bluing looks like, P. Subs and many other Psilocybes will definitely bruise very blue. Welcome to the Shroomery.
