stuck with an induction cooktop
    #23635970 - 09/11/16 02:34 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I want to break this thing. I have to use an induction disk to use any nonmagnetic cookware. It seems that the cooktop cannot provide enough power to bring the pressure cooker up to pressure. Has anyone found a workaround for this? I was trying to think of a way to use more than one induction coil to heat the PC. Maybe two induction disks and some flat piece of metal to bridge the two induction disks and set the PC on top? Somebody help, this is killing me.

edit: I think there may also be the issue that the cooktop will throttle itself when it senses too much heat. There's also another issue that there is a big loss in efficiency when using an induction converter disc. It seems like my options are to find a portable electric range that can provide enough power to get me to 15PSI or find a pressure cooker that's induction compatible and large enough to fit a reasonable amount of quart jars in them or find a PC that's self powered.

Modern PCs are made of aluminum, and are not compatible with induction cook tops.  Even if you happen to "rig" something up, it will perform poorly, if at all.    Don't do it.  If you have the money, an electric PC would be ideal.  A hot plate for your existing PC would be a good option as well.  I did not have $900 for an AA 75x (electric version), so  I purchased a 1500 watt hot plate ($150) with a built-in thermostat for my AA 930 and have been very pleased with the setup.

I like the bayou burners from ace hardware, they come in single/double/triple burners.
These single burner 'classic's where 50$ a piece and well worth it. Just make sure you refill propane tanks.

Sorry if you expected a link to a cooktop, i have several sitting basically new in a drawer because they took to long.

Thanks for the input guys. After some searching, I decided to opt for this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003Z4A0CQ/ref=psdc_13838451_t3_B00125PC5K

It seems that for pressure cooking at 15PSI you'll need about 1500W of power.

I've used a wood burning stove before, as well as suspended over an open flame. I should have taken pics, but it's basically the same concept as this:

You gotta constantly move it to and from the flame source this way tho. Fuckin annoying and very impractical. Just thought it was funny I did that when I had no power once.

After some quick google searching I believe the manufacturer offers a full 1 year warranty on parts and labor. Not sure about the amazon warranty though.

Haha. Someone suggested this to me as well but I brushed it off. I suppose this is why they say not to use a flame source over 12,000 BTUs in the PC manuals. I do have a fire pit in my backyard however....

That ought to do nicely.  It has a thermostat, which is great!  Once you get your heat set where you want it, the thermostat does the rest.  I go out and mow the lawn or whatever during my cycles.  No need to baby sit.
