The Strange Saga of CM Punk
    #23634975 - 09/11/16 08:18 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

That will forever be remembered as one of the most bizarre sagas in the history of mixed martial arts.

A 38 year old guy who has never taken so much as a karate class leverages his pro wrestling fame to cut to the front of the line and join the UFC despite never having a single amateur fight or competition .

He takes a fight with a Jujitsu brown belt who has won two fights in the UFC and is twenty years younger .

Does CM Punk know something we don't ?

No. He doesn't .

Exactly as all logic and reason predict , CM punk is subjected to a hilariously humiliating bully beat down as Mickey Gall (who walked out to the song "oh Mickey your so fine your so fine you blow my mind hey Mickey ! ) takes him down in the first five seconds , pummels him about the head with ground and pound and finally mercifully chokes him out .

The best part is that CM punk, who now appears mentally ill, proceeds to deliver what seems to be a rehearsed victory speech , bizarrely claiming that the absurd ass beating he has just recieved will no doubt be a source of inspiration and strength to dejected children who don't believe in themselves .

You can do anything you put your mind to kids, he says , assuming you are a rich and famous superstar and what you want to put your mind to is getting your ass beat in front of millions of people .

The real lesson is this - pay your dues motherfuckers.

There are no short cuts in cage fighting .

The craziest part is CM punk was a HUGE superstar in WWE beloved by millions.

Why he wouldn't just want to retire with his millions and his fame and respect intact and enjoy the illusion of being a bad ass is a mystery.

And if he really wanted to join the UFC why not actually train for a reasonable amount of time ?

I honestly think the whole thing was some kind of deranged mid life crisis.

It could very well have been a mid life crisis, maybe he was kinda jealous of how UFC is becoming more popular or kinda needed an ego boost so he could feel tough to him self. Or a cash grab that both companies wanted to market on.

That's not how it works.

If you want to compete in mixed martial arts you have to put in the appropriate training, pay your dues and build your way up to UFC.

Anything else disrespects the sport and the other athletes who pay their dues .

I agree, those people train hard every day just for 1 or 2 fights a year. They dedicate their lives to the sport and its almost a mockery to let CM Punk fight in an MMA match.

Exactly. People sacrafice everything , their entire lives , put in decades and endure unbelievable suffering and even then many far superior martial artists never get the chance.

Getting into the UFC is a dream thousands of people sacrafice sweat blood tears and years pursuing and only a tiny fraction will achieve .

To let CM punk have this opportunity when more deserving athletes do not is disrespectful to the sacrafice and commitment of lifelong martial artists and UFC fighters.

It's like giving a high school drop out a full scholarship to Harvard when a 4.0 student with two undergraduate degrees doesn't get in, and then the high school drop out flunks out in the first semester.

Yesterday, before he fought, you had this to say on the topic:

Quote:

Fittingly , today is the MMA debut of mr CM Punk, who never took so much as a karate class before starting training at 38 years old. If he wins his first UFC fight today it will be a big inspiration to me, because he is starting from scratch at 38 years old.

So if he'd have won, you would've felt that he's a "big inspiration", but since he lost, you feel that he is disrespectful.  Which may or may not be true, but you're saying you would've been cool with his disrespect & lack of "paid dues" if he had won.  Not putting in the work, getting the UFC fight based off his D list celeb status would've been inspirational to you, if he had won?  Ok.

I never supported fhe UFCs decision to allow him to fight or his own decision to fight without proper preparation.

But yes if he had won it would have been inspiring in terms of someone at his age being able to succeed .

These two things are not actually exclusive at all.

If you let a one hundred year old  man run in the Olympic 100 metre that is absurd and not a good idea.

But If the one hundred year old man somehow wins, yes that would be pretty damn inspiring .

It doesn't mean letting him race in the place of a more qualified athlete is a good call .

It's not actually difficult to understand how you can disapprove of letting the unqualified athlete compete but also find it inspiring if unqualified athlete somehow wins.

The UFC was sold to a Hollywood talent agency. Expect to see more cheap money grabs like this in the future as the dollars and shock value take priority over athletic ability and talent. From a marketing perspective it was a pretty good idea to expand their audience for the event.

Most people  believe the UFC will become more professionalized and more like other pro sports rather than less.

Make it less of Danas personal old boys social club and more
Of a regulated athletic sport like major league basket ball.

Improvements to the rules , a fighters Union , more adequate and fair pay and benefits , more objective rankings and more transparency as well as hopefully a reduction in extreme weight cutting are all expected .

We shall see.

I have a feeling we won't see many more cases of unqualified fighters being jumped to the UFC after this .

It definitely built a lot of interest and got a lot Of eyes on UFC 203.

It generated a ton of discussion and everyone had to see how it turned out .

But I don't think this particular trick would work twice .

I like how they tried to compare him to Brock Lesnar when he was getting his fight license:rofl2:

Yeah that was pretty amazing

For those who don know Brock was an undefeated division 1 wrestler , while CM punk has never competed in real wrestling.
