If earth...

Earth moves very fast. It spins (rotates) at a speed of about 1,000 miles (1600 kilometers) per hour and orbits around the Sun at a speed of about 67,000 miles (107,000 kilometers) per hour. We do not feel any of this motion because these speeds are constant.
If the above statement from Caltech is true, I should be able to stand on the hood of a car going only 50mph and not feel any movement. But my hat would be blown off my head, my clothes would by flapping in the wind very violently and I would have a hard time standing up.
So if earth is spinning at the speed of 1000mph and also flying through space at 67000mph, how the fuck does grass stand straight up? Why are trees not constantly snapping? How can we have calm days at all? How are all bodies of water not blown away?

Dude its just like being in a car on the highway, when your in a car on the highway traveling at 100mph everything in your car including you to your perception seems to be standing still like a water bottle or a candy bar , yet to an outside observer you and everything in your car will appear to be driving by really fast and be gone in a second or two , does that make it little easier to understand? We're the inside observers to the earth as one is in the car , you can't physically feel it because of the size of you compared to the size of earth! Physics man physics

But you are not inside the earth dude, we are standing on the outside of it.

Plus this is a bad comparison because the earth is way bigger than us compared to us to a car ...

Lol i can just picture trees all snapping and everything going completely haywire if we could see and feel the effects of the speed were all traveling on earth right now , and nice avatar by the way tripppy

Thanks man, shit just makes no sense to me. I don't think size comes into play at those speeds. The force of 67000mph should be felt no matter what imo. It would be like an ant on the outside of a jet liner flying through the air, that little bastard don't stand a chance

I went through the same thought process as you man like how fuck we dont feel it, I had to Google it and stuff and research it and the explanation I gave you was something a physicist said in a nutshell basically , that I read and it made sense to me lol but yeah so what do you think like the earth isnt really moving? I think it's crazy that our solar system itself is also spinning around the center of the galaxy and the galaxy itself is also traveling at high speed nothing is ever still cause the atoms that make us up are vibrating too... and im sure none of is actually know what the fuck is going on lol

It's cause space has no atmosphere, and Earth's atmosphere is what protects us from that effect.

So a layer of gas held in place by gravity can withstand the force of speeds of 67000mph? And not colapse back to earth? So there is no force in space? Like let's say you were flying through space in a ship at 1000mph and stuck your arm out a "window" so to speak that your arm would feel no effects?

That's right, in the vacuum of space there would be no drag on your arm. There is no friction against the vacuum of space, it's virtually empty of matter.

The car analogy is relatively accurate. Think of the atmosphere as a giant, planet-sized windshield. DQ's explanation is also accurate: space has no drag.

It's essentially like a cell with a membrane wall and Earth is it's nucleus
