I just finished watching it last night. They're right, it's really good. I mentioned in another thread about it that I feel like it's kind of a mix between X-Files and The Goonies

To watch or not to watch?!?! If it's good I wanna see it but I don't want to get swept up in attention grabs on the interwebz.

Can you give a general idea of what the show is like? I love scifi but do not like drama and it seemed like a scifi drama. I should give it a hand but if there's a show I'll give a chance it'd be shameless because I like comedy.

Yea you should just watch it and find out for yourself instead of talking about it on the internet.
I mean which choice here is really a more significant waste of time?

Imagine 'Stand By Me' crossed with 'It', and a little 'Dream catcher' tossed in.
... I apologize if that made no sense.
Edit: mix some poltergeist in there for good measure.

I just hate new things at first. For some terrible reason I just love doing and watching he same shit all of the time. It's comfortable. But obviously you're right , watch an episode of Star Trek I've seen 10 times or just give something that people love a chance. I'm often weird like that

Nah that actually makes sense, the 80s theme with the suspense and thrilling plot build up and steady continuation and elaborately played out story..

Yea like what people are saying. I caught so many different 80s shows/movies nostalgia watching it.
I really love that stuff and it was a very refreshing mash up.
Like et, goonies, it, super 8... horror mixed with scifi mixed with conspiracy mixed with light drama humor.

Exactly glad someone understands that. My last gf taught me I was wrong not to take suggestions at times because a show like parks and Rec I never would've watched alone. And now I watch it alone frequently and find it hilarious. But for the most part I rather be bored then watch new things for some reason.

I just watched the first three episodes & was sbout to go to bed
I walk to my bedroom & I was just standing there looking at my reflection not moving and I heard a bang kinda noise on the wall...
show seems to be a good mix of good & cheesy lame filler garbage but overall quite good so far
i've had an acid trip that kinda reminds me of the moms lights so this is pretty far out

I don't understand the point of watching reruns at all.
Stranger Things was am 8.7 of of 10 for me I really loved it Alos, I have a DnD bias as I am a Dungeon Master.
like other people said
it is like Stand by Me, mixed with xfiles and the goonies. Something Stephen King wishes he wrote

It's worth watching. I thought it was longer than it needed to be though, it should have been less episodes. Still though, I would give it a 7.5 out of 10. It's not as good as Narcos, which is probably the best show I've watched since Breaking Bad.

It's pretty dope. Reminded me a lot of the book Firestarter. The first Stephen King book I ever read before he became my favorite author and read most of his stuff. Good show really enjoyed it.

I thought it was pretty cool, definitely one of the better shows I've seen recently, they left a lot of things extremely vague or unexplained which isn't too bad because it means there's a lot they can do with it but at the same time it sucks because the second season isn't coming out for over a year or something like that.

So I decided to watch it because I was curious and did not want to wallow in paranoia about overarching swaths of attention: indulging in the luxuries of the internet age, y'know?
And I've come to a few points of recognition:
It's real good. They did a good job.
The writer of the show is obsessed with Steven King. I know this because I have read quite a few of his novels, and the style of the plot is incredibly Kingian. Small town, spooky mysteries, throwbacks to the 'gunslinger' in episode 5 where Jonathan is doing target practice.. there's even a nod to this influence in episode 6 when a passing character goes: "you guys ever ready any Steven King?" Pretty funny, actually. Cool to see how Steven King continues to shape american horror, sci-fi and fantasy culture. The guy is a prince among men.
Also, it's got a lot of interesting stuff about romance relationships between men and women, portrayed through quite a few of the character's personal lives. Dichotomies, foils, it's like a shakespearean play if shakespeare had gotten really stoned and drunk after watching the X-Files and wrote a quiet little knee-jerker in the dead of night.
I recommend it, Sheekle, but only if you're into horror and don't mind things that take a long time to build up, as far as story arcs go.
but the plot device with psychedelics... so silly

Watched the first two episodes of the new season. Awesome stuff....wanted to take a time machine back to my youth in the eighties. Honestly this type of film making is only going to grow...Hollywood is in deep shit.

I binged it lol, finished the whole second season. I wasn't really disappointed because I had lower expectations after the first season. I just didn't see how they were gonna match the first season. In my opinion the second was good, but not great like the first. I still really enjoyed it.

I finished season 2 already
Once you get sucked in it gets hard to stop watching, but I did tune out a bit during episode 8 and 9 and have to rewatch today. It's not one of those things to put on as background noise though, because they shove a lot of content into those episodes and you'll fall out of the loop fast unless you're giving it the attention it needs. The series took a while for me to get into because of that, but once you're in, you're in.

Yea I binge watched it all last night. Although I do prefer the first season, I did really like this one as well. I don't really want to compare them since the first season was more establishing the characters and the second one was more of their growth from everything that has happened as well as a coming of age as their own persons.

I just binge watched the entire second season in two nights after work. It's fantastic, and in my opinion is wayyyy better then the first season. I am so surprised at how much more developed the story is. All of the characters are so solid that even the unlikeable ones are likeable. I'm not afraid to admit I got a little choked up at one part and shed a tear with the entire group. The CGI is great and the music production is so well done. It's what sends this series over the top. It's really what makes the series more memorable.
I'm not trying to give out any spoilers unless you all want me to rant about some but shout out to the super-hero Bob Newby and Steve was a bad ass all the way.

Last year S U R V I V E played about an hour away from me but I couldn’t make it because of stupid adult life. Really hoping I can catch them live soon.

If it's not a comedy or exceptionally good drama(breaking bad, better call saul) I probably won't get into it. I'll give the pilot a shot after work If I remember to.
A few peeps been talking it up a lot lately but that happens with shows that are mediocre too For instance Dr. Who is a heaping pile of shit, but received lots of praise a few years back.

No prob. Cool presses though
Anyway, just finished season 2. I can't exactly tell which I liked better now that I'm done, but it's been a while since I've seen season 1 so maybe I should rewatch it soon for a better comparison. It was really good though, looks like a lot of opportunity in season 3.
I was so sure that Bob was a spy for a while I was sad to see that dork go when he did though. Mike is such a little prick, it actually kinda bugged me that one of the last things he said to Sam was "you're still not in our party" after all that shit. I was only happy for 11 in the end, not Mike. Fuck Mike.

I neither grew up with Who or enjoy the nostalgia. I just like watching it when it’s super late and I’m hella baked. To me it’s a sci fi that’s entertaining just because it doesn’t take itself too seriously and occasionally messes with some interesting concepts. Also, Amy Pond is my wife in an alternate universe so I’m obligated to watch occasionally.

To this point I've watched Episode 6 of Season 1 and I still somehow wonder why I'm doing this to myself. I can't really stand the acting. To be fair, my suspicion is that the director(s?) have some kind of conception about how they want to show what they want to show that varies greatly from what I deem to be realistic or entertaining. It's a bit straining to watch for me because it doesn't feel authentic.
I know I'm very touchy when it comes down to movies or TV series especially in regard to acting. It all seems too intended and staged. But there's series I really enjoy. For example Better Call Saul or Breaking Bad. And I found Narcos to be exceptionally good, it really had my heart racing and excited. The acting is incredible. They did such a great job. Especially with the 3rd Season, they totally nailed it in my opinion. Beside those series I like Game of Thrones, LOTR, The Hobbit, Rick & Morty and I'm a huge South Park fan. Also I like movies like American Hustle, American Psycho and that's all I can think of right now(Just to give you some background).
But mostly when I start to watch a series or movie, I quit and spend my time doing other things.

They did an excellent job...and all of these comments is demonstrative proof that Hollywood is in deep shit....how many people do you hear wanting to see a movie at the theater?Maybe for Star Wars or IT....I will agree IT was pretty good (as good as a book to a movie can be) but the excitement and anticipattion are for streaming series

So I'm on episode 9 - last one, should be good!!
Episode 7 is the one I want to talk about! At first, I didn't know why they were putting Eleven/Jane in Chicago...I thought that she wouldn't find her sister, or would find her but her sister would be "evil" - possibly under the upside down world and the monster's control, but probably as a government agent.
Boy was I wrong
Instead, we were given a bit of a taste of Season 3

I liked that episode too!
I was a little surprised that they named the character “Kali”. A bit on the nose, right? And then they gave her a thuggee gang. The real life thuggees were a bunch of thieves and killers; I don’t think this gang is much different. I do like the Kali character- the actress is great, and the character is complex. Her gang is a bit one dimensional, but whatever. I agree that there’s a good chance season 3 is spent on interplay between she and Eleven (calling her Jane feels weird).
All in all, pretty cool season so far. I’m on the last ep, hoping to get a chance to finish it tonight. Then I can discuss it as a whole.

I found that whole subplot kinda meh. Other than that I thought it was a great season. The one other thing I would have changed is giving the science teacher more screen time like in the first season. Great character.

Essentially they replaced his char with Samwise Ga...um, I mean Bob Newby (seriously - Newby? who writes this ). Bob is the only thing I can fault season 2 for

I thought Newby was an odd name choice too. Like they needed to write a name for the new character, gave him a placeholder name until they could think of something good, and then just decided to use the placeholder of “Bob Newby”, lol. That’s how Amy Sedaris ended up playing a character named “Jerry Blank” on ‘Strangers With Candy’.

I thought Newby ended up being alright (might have made an ok sidekick for the science teacher actually) but yeah I was thinking of LOTR 100% of the time he was onscreen. Same with the institute guy and the sitcom "Mad About You".
I thought that thing where Newby's programming skills in BASIC were supposedly super pivotal seemed really forced though.

Episode 8 spoiler ahead:
When he died, I just thought he deserved it. I mean, he did something really brave and all, but he got to the lobby, slammed that flimsy ass door (after seeing the demo-dogs bust through bulletproof glass), then he sees Joyce & just stops in his tracks and starts smiling for like 10 minutes. Like a freakin moron. If he had just kept running, he could have smiled at her later AND lived.

Lol, yep. It was a great moment though.
One thing I thought was hilarious this season was the KFC product placement in that one dinner scene. Seems like kind of a cynical two-birds-with-one-stone play: it comes off as an ironic nod to 80s blatant product placement, but undoubtedly they really did get paid too.

Honestly, every character in that gang just sucked. I feel like the writers stretched themselves a little thin trying to "build the mythos" this time around. There were honestly a few characters that they could have done without this season (the gang and Max's family, mostly). I do like how Nancy's character has evolved though. She's got some kunoichi shit going on.
I hope that for season 3 (assuming that it even comes, since one of the actors has been banned from the US) they just get back to the basics of some Eldritch horror stalking the town.
I find it hard to believe that those kids would be so into D&D but know so little about the Cthulhu mythos. I really think that The Mind Flayer seemed more like Shub-Niggurath and that the Demogorgon seemed more like a Mind Flayer, but that's a pretty minor point. Maybe they can do a Whisperer in the Darkness thing next season though. The Mi-Go seem like a pretty fitting enemy for that cohort, especially seeing how the Mi-Go are in cahoots with the Outer Gods and their own human agents. They also steal peoples' brains to keep their minds prisoner and then wear their victims' faces and hands as disguises.

Yeah the 80's vibe was one of the first things that drew me (and everyone I know) to Stranger Things! They really have done a great job of making sure everything is from the early 80's!

I love how 80's it is. Unfortunately I am a really harsh critic whenever I watch a new show, and that can stop me from watching more. With this one, I immediately knew it was gold.

If you've done any research or have interest in Military Operations that took place in Montauk near the time this show is set in (1980's) then you will certainly enjoy this show. Hell the original name, & fairly certain the original location within the show, was Montauk. Guess they couldn't be too specific.. This is much more applies to season 1 as nearly every experiment in the show has been done, and admitted to by our own government. MK-ultra? Even our President Clinton admitted and apologized to these experiments that were conducted to some degree on millions over decades. Montauk was said to have been a faction/compartmentalization of such experiments. Season 2 is much more pure fiction sci-fi; however very enjoyable.

If you like the music from the show, and 80s music in general, you might be interested in a niche genre called synthwave. It’s 80s inspired modern dance music.

Oh but Winona Ryder just absolutely over acts the whole time. I mean it’s like the director said I just want you to over due, and she agreed.
I’m not saying at all that I don’t like her acting because it’s really good but, it’s a bit over the top

That’s some cool video game music for sure!
Rocky: the score is by 2 members of S U R V I V E, the whole group makes some cool music as well! I have the first season OST on a cool split transparent red/blue LP.
Citizen X: I know what you’re saying, but I actually think Ryder plays the role well. Through the first season especially, she just seems so distraught and hen-pecked. And I get it. I’m naturally a very anxious person, and if my son was missing and likely dead, I’d be absolutely losing my shit. Probably worse than she did. So her acting there makes sense to me.

Haha, yeah. That shoplifting incident tho.
I love Ryder. Beetlejuice and Heathers are absolute classics that I watched a million times back then, so she was a part of my childhood, in a way. I was thrilled to see her in the first season of ST, and in such great form too. I think she turned in an excellent performance in a role she’s been perfectly cast in. Very pleased to see a Winona Ryder comeback.
I also would like to see a Rick Moranis comeback, but I’m not gonna hold my breath waiting for it.

@Burke thanks dude! I have been listening to so synthwave playlists. I will check them out!
I'm like halfway through the last episode of season one. Fucking epic so far!
Lol, at when Steve walks into thhe house right before the standoff with the monster thing, it looked like he was walking into a tweaker den. Nancy and Jonathan look all tweaked out with weapons looking around all crazy. Major laughs from that scene. They turned into bad assess (with all the traps, and just attitude in general) pretty quick.
This is like the series stephen king never wrote.
Edit:
I'm really glad that Steve turned it around too, I like a good douche -> good guy subplot [\spoiler]

I thought the second season suffered as the mystery was uncovered.
The feared demigorgon of the first season is relegated to no more than a grunt; and the ambiguous monster that takes its place as main villain does not provoke much fear. It just reminded me of a regurgitation of the Eye in the LOTR stories.
Where first season was a psychological thriller, wrapped in a sci-fi story, the second season is pure sci-fi action.

Man, if I lived in your area, I’d be going to see FM-84 and The Midnight next weekend. It’s the second live show for both acts, and the first one looked really great. The Midnight has their live saxophonist out and everything. Really cool show. In case you’re not familiar with them:
Rocky: I agree that the second season closer was real nice. Had a real Pretty In Pink feel to it. Billy may or may not factor in next season, but I think the human antagonist might be Dr. Brenner. Or maybe he’ll be the end game, like Eleven’s version of Kill Bill. Or it’s a good guess that Billy will be the local bad guy. He’s probably gonna bang Mike’s trampy mom, then lay some sick “your mom” burns. Glad you enjoyed it!

Overall stunning. Best show I have seen in a very long time. The pressure must be immense for the producers.
He is totally going to bang Mike's mom. This is where trouble will brew, I think. I am guessing that said banging will influence Mike's mom to make bad choices that negatively effect "the party." I have a feeling that Billy has some racist tendencies, as well.
On the other hand, the "your mom" burns would be quite amusing.

Anyone who hasn't finished season 2, don't hover over my post and read whatever bullshit I had to say about the show or do so after finishing the season because I say a lot of spoilers as well as the ending.
He is definitely racist lol never even met Lucas but could "tell" he was a bad guy based off appearance which is easily implying it's because of skin color, pretty much since his introduction in the show I was waiting for the satisfaction of seeing him die so I can only hope he does next season
I mean I originally didn't like Steve in the first season until the end of season 1 and now I love him as a character so maybe something will happen in season 3 to make me like Billy too, especially considering he's got an asshole dad which adds to why he himself started off as a dick (and stayed a dick) so there's a chance there could be some character development there and he grows to be a little more humble and understanding.
Definitely think Burke is right about Dr. Brenner being a main component of season 3 though, otherwise the giant smoke monster thing showing up at the end of seaons 2 wouldn't matter since it has no way to connect to their world now unless something or someone like that asshole Brenner doing something that makes it possible now that we know for sure he's alive and why that was relevant at all considering he had no real part in season 2 at all yet was important enough to bring up. My only bitch about the whole season is how eleven (Don't care if her name is Jane, she's forever Eleven to me) was barely relevant for almost 3/4th's of the season, I know it made sense and added to the story but her and her powers are the best part to me lol
Also hoping that in season 3 they introduce her sister a little more since that was a teaser and a half, hopefully other numbers are still alive and get introduced too.

Burke Dennings said: Thanks! I think it’s cool too, but in the past week I’ve tried a couple times to talk about it & no one ever replies, lol. It’s a pretty niche interest.
I'm not sure exactly what this is about but it seems relevant. Those guys are playing in dc next month.

After watching Beyond Stranger Things the directors said initially Steve was going to become the human bad guy for the kids but ended up liking him so much so they made his character help the kids and redeemed him. But because they did they then felt they had to introduce Billy to fill his spot. So I have a feeling he might remain a dick in the coming season.
I am still waiting to see how the demogorgon in the first actually came about. I still felt like perhaps it was some sort of Montauk monster made from the subconscious of Eleven. Especially bc there wasn't another and she seemed to be the only one to destroy it. The Mind Flayed seemed to actually be an actual entity in the Upside Down.
I am really excited to see more of Eleven's sister, Kali/Eight, in the coming seasons.
