So I bought a $2K flying camera... Now what?

Title pretty much says it all. Ever since I was a kid I have been obsessed with helicopters. I used to fly RC helicopters, but they crashed a lot. Recently I have been looking a lot into buying a drone for arial footage, and a friend of mine tells me that he won a drone in a raffle. He told me he doesn't really want it, and I took a look at it--it's just one model down from the one I was drooling over online. He sold it to me for $500.
I don't even have anything that I can watch the 4K footage on, but it does shoot in super high quality. I'm hoping to bring it way out in nature with a few batteries and get some really deep tranquil nature shots.
I don't know... I guess it's just a toy, but really I'm just an adult-child, so Yipeeee! I get to fly in the sky and take pictures of you sunning naked in your backyard.
Question for you though... how can I make some money with this thing?

Call up some realtors and ask them if they want some professional photography done of their properties.

Nice man!
If you get detailed enough then you could do aerial photography for websites and marketing

Majorly jely. That thing is a money making machine... Go to fests and get footage for them.... Best learn how to operate it from both line of sight And point of view before you do anything though. Drones arent idiot proof

Festivals would probably dig that for sure. Make all kinds of crazy teaser videos with that stuff. Could be a good way to get free tickets too.

Man, i should probably buy a real rig instead of building the one i am right now. A good setup ready to go would probably be 3k starting with a dsl and gimbal and all that jazz.
The headgear alone for fpv alone is expensive af, i really want to get the FatShark goggles...

You build drones yourself? That's pretty awesome. Are you the one who was asking about arduino stuff a while back? That makes sense now.

Yeah, that was me. I've put a lot of my electronics on the backburner because of financial and life stuff, i'm still in the middle of making a drone run off cell towers and IoT.

If you're in the US you need to register yourself with the FAA in order to fly your multi rotor. It's a new law just put in this year.
Also flying over people and cars/buildings is illegal, so festivals are a no-go.
Yes, I'm also into RC helicopters.

404 i am really really interested in what your working on. I had a frienc that was aspiring to build drones and was all charismatic and inspiring about it. I watched him work on microchips and shit. He literally took the bluetooth part out of one speaker that had broken and saudered or installed it in another. He claimed his dad used to work on war-heads or some shit and when he was younger RC cars and stuff were their bonding hobby.
So I guess what Im saying is it would be both fun and intriguing to read a post about where youre at with your drone project and if youd be willing to share any information youve learned with other potential drone enthusiasts.

Here's a pretty good article that details how to go about acquiring the licencing required by the FAA before you operate a commercial UAV in US airspace:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2729603
What model did you buy? Phantom 3? I've been tossing around the idea of picking one of those up myself. You can buy refurbished units for about USD 450 now, and they do indeed produce some very nice footage. Like 404 says though, make sure you actually put in some time to learn to fly it before you operate it around anything you don't want to damage.
I myself am one of those nerdy FPV racers, and it's probably the most fun hobby I've ever taken up.
Hey 404, did you ever get your project finished? It was an APM autonomous machine, IIRC... I'm going to put one of those boards in my autonomous lawnmower that I'm building, lol.

A little background: Im a master roofer by trade. So this guy I was talking to on a social networking site was had to get his license to fly one of these things. He was paid a lot of money (thousands) just for a bid on this huge church with a slate roof mostly because of the sheer size of the roof and that it's not really walkable because of the slate.
So, there are a variety of ways to make money off this drone fo sho.

I've been flying with the NAZE32 rev6 board. Inwant the APM system as i can do more with it... It's really hard to get it to function properly and i may need to reflash the board to use it again... They are neat boards for sure though, way more functionality than the naze.
As for the bluetooth comment- i thought about taking apart a ps3 controller and using it to control the flight of the drone... Already has bluetooth, but that's not good enough hardware for flying a drone. You'd have to be able to hack the hardware in a sense and add on some real tx/rx systems onto the controller, i'm sure you could build one from scratch out of some push buttons, joysticks, and some other components along with a rasPi or arduino. My largest issue right now is getting the apm board to communicate with mission planner after having a modified sketch flashed to the board via the special Arduino IDE made for apm... As it stands right now, that dog just ain't gon' hunt.
Anyway, like i said, i've put everything aside for now. I couldn't do any programming right now if i wanted as i don't even have a working laptop.

Do you have any links to websites for beginners on this subject?
Also, why cant you do programming without a laptop? Is it because of the keyboard and the need to use other characters? If thats the case, they have programmer keyboards you can download and install on phones or tablets...

I can't program straight from an iphone. As it stands right now, i don't know of any software i can run that will allow me to compile a sketch to the apm board, and even if i did, i'd need a lightning connector to micro usb connector cable and i don't know if that even exists. I can't run mission planner from this device either.
If you're looking into building your own drone, start with a DJI flamewheel frame or clone and there are a number of options for the actual flight board. Arduinos of various types, rasPi, naze and apm. The former two give you more room to grow and expand your project but may come with extra weight depending on what you do unless its one of the mini arduinos. The latter two options typically have gyros barometers and eccelerometers already built in them, and are light.

I've got a Naze rev6 in my RotorX Atom, and I agree, it's not really suited for the more advanced functionality that your project would require. It's a pretty good board for the acrobatic FPV flying in manual mode that I like to do though, however I'm looking at replacing it with something that has an F3 chip, so that I can run lower looptimes and obtain a more locked-in tune.
The pace of development of the open-sourced firmware (Betaflight) is so rapid nowadays that almost as soon as you've built a competitive racer, it's obsolete. Thankfully, once you've sussed how to put one together yourself, it is just a collection of $20 parts, and keeping up with the bleeding edge setups is relatively cheap, especially compared to other forms of motorsport.
Oh, and there's been quite a few lower-priced goggles sets released this year, much cheaper than Fatsharks. I think I have put about $110 CAD into my DIY Hobbyking goggles, and in my opinion, they are much more immersive than everything in the FS lineup, save maybe the Dominator HD v2, but they're priced at about $700 CAD.
