How long should I let my agar plate colonize before I do the tiger drop?

I read that you shouldn't let an agar plate get to the edge. Why is that? It got me worried and wondering now when is the optimal time. When it's 80% colonized? Understanding the logic would help.
I'm using pasty plates, by the way, if that matters.

As soon as you see clean growth, go ahead and transfer out a wedge from the outside edge of the mycelium. The longer you let the plate colonize, the higher the chance the mycelium might run into a contaminant along the way.

he asked about doing a drop, not a transfer. the answer is not the same for these 2 situations.
when dropping your agar to grains, you want the agar puck to be as fully colonized as possible, which should be for obvious reasons.
but when you are taking transfers, you don't want the agar to hit the wall because there is no where for it to grow with adequate food source. we always take transfers from the leading edges to ensure we get the youngest and healthiest mycelium, so when it hits the wall, it makes it troublesome to transfer from the leading edge.
also, since there is no agar on the wall, there could potentially be dormant contaminates. we know the agar is clean because if any contams were on it, they would germinate. but we have no such assurance on the walls, so best to proceed with caution around them.
